Our partner in Bolivia is Agricafe, established by Pedro Rodriguez and his children Pedro Pablo and Daniela. Agricafe can be credited as a key driving force behind the revival of Bolivia's specialty coffee industry, and today remains a crucial pillar of the country's specialty coffee sector.
Several renowned European and American roasters, including Intelligentsia, Has Bean, Stumptown, Drop Coffee, 49th Parallel, Maruyama, and others, consistently source their beans from Agricafe.
Pedro has established several important proprietary estates in the Caranavi region, such as Finca Don Carlos and Finca Alastias.
Even more excitingly, he has also created Finca El Fuerte estate in the high-altitude areas of the eastern Santa Cruz region, which has already yielded its first harvest this year.
After introducing Pedro's coffee last year, we were thoroughly impressed and made a special trip to bring back this eagerly anticipated secret weapon. The several varieties that have now arrived are absolutely worth savoring repeatedly.
In addition to his own estates, Pedro harbors the dream of reviving Bolivia's specialty coffee industry and improving the livelihoods of coffee farmers, which led him to initiate the "El Sol de Manana" (Tomorrow's Sun) program.
This program invests significant effort in mentoring smallholder farmers, providing technical support for crucial aspects such as breeding, pruning, fertilization, and harvesting techniques. It purchases cherries from member farmers at higher prices and processes them using Agricafe's own processing facilities, creating a virtuous cycle that improves both farmer income and quality for sustainable development.
Bolivia is one of the five most diverse countries in the world - a landlocked nation surrounded by five countries and deeply influenced by them, with a population of approximately 10 million. Indigenous peoples, who account for about 60% of the total population, are divided into 36 ethnic groups. Mestizos (mixed European and indigenous) make up 26%, with Europeans and other ethnic groups comprising the remainder.
The terrain ranges from Illimani Peak at 6,462 meters to Lake Titicaca at 3,812 meters - the world's highest navigable alpine lake where large vessels can sail - as well as tropical rainforests! Such diverse terrain makes it a paradise for specialty coffee micro-batches.
However, Bolivia's coffee production has been declining year by year. From 1997 to 2014, export volumes fell annually to just one-quarter of their previous levels. According to Roast Magazine data, Bolivia ranks 38th in coffee production, even behind the United States at 35th place, making specialty micro-batch Bolivian coffee extremely precious and rare.
The reasons lie in Bolivia's underdeveloped economic infrastructure and basic facilities. Bolivia remains the poorest country in South America. Additionally, while Bolivia was blessed with naturally diverse terrain, poor infrastructure has become a critical factor that hampers coffee processing, transportation, and quality.
