If you say Starbucks doesn't count as premium coffee, it might now respond: I have Blue Mountain Coffee! Of course, some people might question whether this is Blue Mountain Coffee or "Blue Mountain flavored coffee"?

Starting this year (January 26th), Starbucks will launch a new bean "Jamaica Wallenford Estate Blue Mountain Coffee" in its Reserve stores, with a national limit of 3,504 packs. The 250-gram beans are priced at 388 yuan, making them the highest-priced even in the Reserve series!

The Promise of Quality

This should be a good bean. In the coffee world, Blue Mountain Coffee means top-tier coffee. But because its reputation is too big and too useful, counterfeits are naturally numerous. However, genuine Blue Mountain Coffee is actually rare—only those certified by Jamaica's specially established "Coffee Industry Board" (CIB) can truly call themselves Blue Mountain Coffee. Among these, Wallenford, located above 7,000 feet altitude, is the dominant force in the entire Blue Mountain coffee cultivation.

The beans that Starbucks promotes so heavily certainly cannot be too terrible. In 2010, it first launched the Reserve premium coffee line in the North American market, then updated products quarterly, and had previously launched this Blue Mountain Coffee locally. These single-origin beans, suitable for pour-over, siphon, and other brewing methods, are distinguished from other blended beans (beans from different regions combined), helping Starbucks solidify its image as a "coffee expert." And with Starbucks' enormous commercial volume, it can obtain any green coffee beans it wants at sufficiently reasonable prices.

Brand Enhancement Strategy

But the communicative significance of Blue Mountain Coffee is certainly not the whole story. As we mentioned before, it's also a way for Starbucks to enhance its brand added value.

A simple truth is that if Starbucks completed an educational mission in China where independent coffee shops were not yet widespread, then constantly advancing consumers will eventually "grow up." At that time, they will inevitably look back and criticize their former Starbucks, and what will Starbucks do then? So Starbucks must also advance.

In several Reserve stores, including the Taikoo Li flagship store in Chengdu, siphon coffee pots have begun to be used. Staff will stir and brew with wooden spoons while conveying the spirit of coffee to customers. Meanwhile, the Victoria Arduino Black Eagle VA388 semi-automatic coffee machine, used in the WBC World Barista Championships from 2015 to 2017, has also appeared in some Starbucks stores. Thus, like the newly launched Blue Mountain Coffee, they all express Starbucks' desire to shape itself in the Chinese market as "I can also be very premium."

Practical Considerations

Currently, the supply of these coffee beans is unknown, but it's conceivable that they will be prioritized in select stores. Moreover, after all, they are coffee beans. Considering that most people don't have the patience to wait for a pour-over, after talking about beans for so long, they will probably all end up in an Americano (or other) by the same path.
