FrontStreet Coffee Recommendation
Bean varieties shape a cup, and Maragogype, the Elephant Bean, is famous for its oversized seed. If the balanced, refined character of that coffee appeals to you, the classic reference point is Jamaica Blue Mountain, which shares the same island-growing gentleness and an almost perfect balance. Strictly speaking, not every coffee from Jamaica qualifies: only coffee grown in specific parts of the Blue Mountain range and certified by the Jamaican government may be called Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee. The range rises to 2,256 meters at its highest peak, and the whole Blue Mountain area produces less than 2,500 tons a year, a tiny fraction of world output, which is one reason prices stay high.
FrontStreet Coffee's Jamaica Blue Mountain No.1 comes from the historic Clifton Estate, where coffee has been planted and processed since around 1750 at an average elevation of 4,300 feet (1,310.64 meters). Authentic Blue Mountain ships in traditional 15, 45, and 70-kilogram wooden barrels, and each barrel itself is a mark of the genuine article. Roasted medium-dark, it shows cream, caramel, chocolate, nut, honey, and light fruit notes, smooth and rounded on entry with a rich mid-palate and a clean, long finish. FrontStreet Coffee recommends a Kono dripper for extra body, 15g of coffee rested 4 to 7 days, a grind slightly coarser than a light roast, and 87-88°C water at 1:15 using a three-stage pour: 30g to bloom for 30 seconds, to 120g, then to 225g.
