Clarifying 'Yirgacheffe'

Yirgacheffe Coffee Region Map

The term 'Yirgacheffe' is renowned in the international coffee market, having garnered significant attention over the past decade. Most people generally (or vaguely) know that Yirgacheffe coffee beans come from the town of Yirgacheffe in the Gedeo region of southern Ethiopia, and that 'Yirgacheffe' is often followed by what appears to be a place name, such as Wenago, Beloya, Idido, and so on. According to explanations from professional coffee bean hunters (or purchasing specialists) who frequently travel to producing regions, there are many vague designations, hierarchical errors, and instances of misinformation being spread...

According to publicly available information from Linking Coffee, clarifying these administrative hierarchical relationships requires considerable research effort; otherwise, even many upstream green coffee importers find themselves confused.

Linking Coffee explains that to understand these relationships, one must first understand Ethiopia's four-tier administrative structure:

Province - Zone - Woreda - Kebele

The 'Yirgacheffe' we are so familiar with is, according to Ethiopia's officially regulated coffee-producing regions, distributed across two zones, encompassing a total of eight woredas:

Gedeo Zone: Dilla, Wenago, Bule, Yirgacheffe, Kochere, Gedeb

Borena Zone: Abaya, Gelena

Therefore, the Yirgacheffe/Gedeb coffee beans refer to coffee produced in Gedeb Woreda within the Gedeo Zone. Its hierarchical level is the same as Kochere, not a small village under Kochere town, because among the 25 villages under Kochere's jurisdiction, there is indeed no Gedeb. (Some Taiwanese coffee merchants or coffee professionals occasionally make this error)

According to Linking Coffee, this misplacement is understandable, considering that Gedeb's location is indeed remote. From the most well-known Yirgacheffe town, there is still a journey of at least 40 kilometers to reach Gedeb town, and that's just to arrive in Gedeb town itself.

If one wants to venture deeper into villages like Worka Sakaro, Halo Bariti, Banko Gotiti, Banko Dahato, etc., one must travel another dozen kilometers of muddy roads, making access truly difficult.

The entire Gedeb region has an altitude of at least 1950 meters, with coffee farms situated at 2000-2200 meters considered relatively low. Many coffee trees here are planted on mountain slopes at 2200-2400 meters. Coffee beans produced at such extremely high altitudes naturally stand out across the entire Yirgacheffe region.
