Ethiopia MATAHARA
Matahara is not a place name, but a micro-lot brand developed by Ethiopian exporter Moplaco. The founder of Moplaco, Yanni, developed a series of green coffee brands, each representing the flavor characteristics of different Ethiopian regions. Matahara is one of these, collecting coffee from extremely high-altitude regions at 2300 meters, with actual cultivation locations in western Ethiopia. Its flavor characteristics include spice notes, high sweetness, rich body, and medium acidity. In the Oromifa language, Matahara means "new idea," which is exactly the new coffee concept that Yanni hoped to bring.
Moplaco holds an export license and can purchase green coffee beans from the "Ethiopia Commodity Exchange," then transport them to their headquarters in Addis Ababa for meticulous manual sorting combined with machine sorting, allowing the full potential of each micro-lot to be fully expressed.
Yanni Georgalis founded Moplaco in 1972. As a third-generation coffee exporter, Yanni is highly respected both within Ethiopia and internationally, not only for his excellent coffee quality but also for his integrity and fairness in business. He passed away suddenly in 2008, and his daughter Heleanna resolutely took over her father's Moplaco legacy.
Born in eastern Harar, Ethiopia, Heleanna was forced to flee her homeland due to civil war during her teenage years. She grew up and was educated in Europe, building a very successful career in finance. She never imagined that one day she would inherit her father's business in Ethiopia. The coffee production environment and bidding system in Ethiopia are extremely complex, but she gradually developed her own approach. Under her leadership, Moplaco continues to produce high-quality coffee.
