Panama La Esmeralda

The land of La Esmeralda was first consolidated and purchased by a Swedish man named Hans Elliot in 1940. This land spanned hundreds of hectares, which now includes the Palmira and Cañas Verdes estates. In 1967, a Swedish-American banker, Rudolph A. Peterson (1904-2003), acquired La Esmeralda as his retirement business. At that time, the land was primarily used for cattle ranching, with some small coffee plantations mixed in. By 1975, the Peterson family converted the cattle ranch to dairy farming, which was quite successful and still occupies half of La Esmeralda's land today. In the mid-1980s, the family began exploring different business development opportunities, such as coffee cultivation, which seemed promising given Boquete's rich coffee production history.

La Esmeralda is located in Boquete, Panama's premium coffee-growing region in Central America. The area primarily grows Typica, Bourbon, Catuai, and Geisha varieties. Due to its dedication to environmental stewardship and special care, it has received Rainforest Alliance certification. Although La Esmeralda is world-renowned for its Geisha variety, the estate's unique environment and green bean processing techniques have earned widespread appreciation for its coffee beans.

Panama's La Esmeralda Specialty is a rare award-winning auction coffee that has set new records three times in online auctions: $21 per pound in June 2004, $50.25 per pound in May 2006, $130 per pound in May 2007, and reaching $170 per pound in May 2010.

Esmeralda Estate Award Records:

Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) Coffee of the Year Second Place (2009, 2008)
