Introduction

Rare Treasure - Laurina Pointed Bourbon, a Natural Low-Caffeine Native Variety from Réunion Island

Guatemala's Finca Nueva Granada LAURINA

Laurina Pointed Bourbon is a natural low-caffeine variety. While typical Arabica coffee contains between 0.9% - 1.2% caffeine, Laurina Pointed Bourbon is naturally low in caffeine with only 0.48% content - half that of regular coffee. Despite this, Laurina possesses the enchanting aroma and flavor characteristic of coffee.

Once favored by European royal courts in the 18th century, it was extensively cultivated on Bourbon Island (Réunion Island) during the 18th-19th centuries. However, due to windstorms, rust disease, and pest infestations, Laurina Pointed Bourbon virtually "disappeared" after 1950.

For nearly a century, Japanese coffee trading companies have had considerable influence in global coffee history. 40 years ago, a bean hunter from a Japanese trading company embarked on a special journey to Réunion Island, the original home of Bourbon, and discovered the "long-lost" Pointed Bourbon, finding a few surviving native specimens.

In 1993, the Japanese bean hunter traveled to Guatemala, delivering 25 seeds to the estate owner. This rare Pointed Bourbon variety was planted on the San Marcos volcano, where fertile volcanic soil and favorable microclimate enabled the short-statured Pointed Bourbon to begin thriving in Guatemala.

Finca Nueva Granada is a century-old German-owned estate located in San Marcos, Guatemala. Having endured civil wars and multiple volcanic eruptions, this historic estate stands steadfast. The estate is surrounded by the highest active volcanoes in Central America - Tajumulco and Tacana. The magnificent landscape, coupled with ash coverage from volcanic eruptions, contributes to the exceptionally delicate and rich flavor profile of coffee harvested from this estate. The estate's water source comes from volcanic springs rich in minerals, and all washed processing uses this natural water source, which further contributes to the excellent taste through proper fermentation.

The estate is committed to promoting Rainforest Alliance certification, child protection associations, and various social care initiatives. A truly admirable estate philosophy.
