Bali Coffee Beans - Peaberry
Bali coffee beans - peaberry is a variant of coffee beans, mainly referring to Peaberry or caracoli, while peaberry is just a common Chinese term.
Botanical Perspective
From a botanical perspective, peaberry can be considered a defect. There are two causes: one is damage by insects before the coffee fruit forms, and the other may be due to factors such as prolonged drought or nutrient imbalance. Additionally, coffee beans growing at the end of coffee tree branches may also exhibit this phenomenon.
Coffee Bean Formation
Coffee beans are the fruit of the coffee tree. Normally, a single fruit contains two coffee beans, known as Type I. However, due to the aforementioned factors, some fruits mature with only a single bean. This oval-shaped single coffee bean is called peaberry, or Type II. Compared to Type II, Type I is sometimes colloquially called "female bean" in Chinese. In fact, they are just differences in coffee bean growth patterns, not gender differences, and the Chinese terminology can be misleading.
Characteristics of Peaberry
The English name for peaberry is, as mentioned, Peaberry, also called round bean in Chinese. Only 5% of beans from a coffee tree are peaberry, while the rest are female beans. Actually, peaberry is a deformity that occurs during coffee bean growth. Normal coffee beans have two hemispheres, but peaberry has only one, hence also called single bean. A single hemisphere absorbs more nutrients, making the coffee beans appear larger in color, shape, and size. When brewed, the coffee has a continuous aroma with sweet aftertaste. Due to its rarity, it's also called dream coffee. However, because of its scarcity - only a few peaberry beans among a hundred coffee beans - farmers generally don't specifically separate them for sale. This difference is hard to notice unless you visit the production site firsthand. Of course, some individual merchants do sell peaberry. But as the saying goes, rarity makes things precious, and naturally, peaberry coffee is considered more valuable.
Indonesian Coffee Production
★Indonesia is the world's second-largest coffee producer, and its Bali coffee beans - Golden Coffee enjoys international reputation as Indonesia's national treasure. Coffee beans are divided into peaberry and female beans. Peaberry beans are slightly smaller, oval-shaped. Female beans are larger than peaberry beans, semi-oval in appearance. Female bean coffee has a slightly bitter and sour taste, with a heavy coffee flavor, and needs to be consumed with creamer or milk. Peaberry, on the other hand, has a mellow and fragrant taste without sour or astringent flavors, making it most suitable for those who prefer black coffee. On a coffee tree, peaberry production accounts for only 5-10% of total output.
Brewing Instructions
Coffee powder should be brewed with filter paper or a teapot/coffee maker with a filter screen using boiling water for two minutes before drinking. The coffee is pure coffee without any additives. It's not instant coffee, so coffee grounds are a normal phenomenon during brewing!
History of Golden Coffee
The renowned "Golden Coffee" true original manufacturer 'Butterfly Global Brand' has a history of 72 years. Initially, coffee beans were slowly roasted using wood fire to achieve optimal richness, purity, and aroma. Since 1943, they have introduced the latest roasting technology and equipment from Germany, insisting on original bean flavor, absolutely no flavorings, and no production of instant coffee - only producing truly high-quality original bean ground coffee.
Bali Butterfly Global Brand Coffee
Indonesia Bali "Global Butterfly Brand" coffee has its own coffee plantation. The coffee is produced from the Batur volcanic area in Bali, Indonesia. This region belongs to high-altitude areas above 500 meters, producing low-caffeine Arabica coffee beans containing only 0.5-1.5% caffeine. After two years of storage, combined with complex and careful roasting, peaberry beans are then manually selected, a process that is quite time-consuming and labor-intensive.
Peaberry: Also Known as Small Round Bean
On a coffee tree, only 5% are peaberry, meaning that for every 100 grams of yield, only 5-6 grams of peaberry can be selected. Its shape is round and full, which can better preserve the coffee flavor compared to the generally flat female beans. The taste is neither astringent nor bitter, with richer aroma and sweet aftertaste. Combined with its scarcity and difficulty in selection, peaberry commands a high price and is considered the finest coffee, thus highlighting its rarity and preciousness.
Female Bean: Also Known as Flat Bean
Female beans are what we commonly see as half coffee beans, relatively flat in appearance with obvious grooves in the middle after roasting. On a coffee tree, 95% are female beans, which are the type of coffee we generally drink.
Green Beans
★ Green beans: Cultivated in Bali highlands, the volcanic soil and cool climate provide a highly favorable growing environment for coffee trees.
