Characteristics of Asian Coffee Beans

Asian coffee beans are characterized by high body and low acidity, with herbal notes, woody scents, earthy flavors, and spicy aromas. Specialty beans primarily come from Indonesia as the main growing region. Indonesia grows 90% Robusta beans and 10% Arabica beans, but the reputation of regions like Mandheling has secured Indonesian beans a place in the specialty coffee market.

Notable Asian Coffee Varieties

(1) Mandheling: Unique herbal and woody notes are distinctive characteristics. Additionally, the high body and low acidity are qualities that other regional coffee beans cannot match.

(2) Golden Mandheling: Mandheling that has undergone four rounds of manual hand-picking. Due to the high defect rate of regular Mandheling, which has been criticized, Golden Mandheling was developed. The herbal and earthy flavors are replaced by rich, roasted aromas and bright, clear fruity acidity. (PWN Company registered it as "Gold Mandheling," while BIWA Company registered it as "Gold Top Mandheling" - both meaning Golden Mandheling.)

(3) Papua New Guinea: Abbreviated as PNG. The flavor differs from typical Asian beans, instead resembling the bright characteristics of Central American beans, with citrus and floral aromas. The roasted sweet aroma is also prominent.

Other Asian growing regions include Aged Mandheling, Aceh coffee, and Sulawesi.

India

The southwestern state of Karnataka is the main producing area, where coffee beans are large-sized. Coffee beans from the southeastern state of Tamil Nadu, although smaller in size, are considered premium quality in India.

Laos: Volcanic Terrain and World-Class Specialty Coffee

Laos was formerly colonized by France, which left behind a coffee culture. Combined with Laos' unique volcanic terrain - the only highland terrain among Southeast Asian countries - the fertile soil and significant climate variations are ideal for coffee bean cultivation. Currently, Laos' largest coffee farmer is a Thai beverage company, but they have invited an agricultural technology team from Taiwan to manage operations. Although Laos' coffee production worldwide is not large, it has been rated as specialty grade.

Summary of Asian Coffee Characteristics

Asian coffee beans emphasize the body texture in the middle to later stages rather than the floral and fruity acidity of the front end. They feature deep, rich aromas and Mandheling's unique scents. Suitable for dark roasting to bring out their characteristic roasted qualities.

Recommended Asian Coffee Bean Brands

FrontStreet Coffee's roasted Asian coffee beans - including Yunnan small-grain coffee, Yemen Mocha coffee beans, and Indonesian Mandheling coffee - offer full guarantees in both brand and quality. More importantly, they provide excellent value. A half-pound (227g) bag costs only around 80-90 yuan. Calculating at 15g per pour-over coffee, one bag can make 15 cups of coffee, with each single-origin cup costing only about 6 yuan. Compared to cafe prices that often reach dozens of yuan per cup, this represents exceptional value.
