My Experience with the De'Longhi Drip Coffee Machine
I previously used a Bonavita pour-over drip coffee maker. Since I needed another drip coffee machine in my daily life and wanted to try a different brand, I purchased something from De'Longhi. De'Longhi has Italian heritage, which results in packaging that is mostly in English with no Chinese explanations. I had to use translation software to understand much of it, and it even came with a complimentary package of pre-ground coffee.
Opening the box, there was only the drip coffee maker and an instruction manual. Fortunately, the manual was in Chinese, otherwise I would have been tempted to return it. I bought a national standard version but they still gave me English materials. To prevent the machine from moving and getting damaged during transportation, they used paper to secure it in place.
The vast majority of the De'Longhi household large-capacity drip coffee maker is made of plastic, with the middle part and top cover being metal. In the middle, there's a decorative metal strip with the De'Longhi logo pattern in the center. It's mainly divided into two parts: a water pot and the drip device. It stands 260mm tall and doesn't take up too much space, making it versatile enough to match any home decor style.
The back contains the water tank with a maximum capacity of 650ml, which can make about 5 cups of coffee at once. This allows you to enjoy the pleasure of life alone or share your results with others. The water tank is semi-transparent with water level indicator marks on top, making it convenient to measure the number of cups to be brewed. Because the flavor of coffee is not only related to the beans but also closely related to the water amount.
The water pot is also a large 650ml glass pot with measurement lines on its body. It's made of safety glass that's resistant to high temperatures, and there are no flaws in its craftsmanship. There's a protruding round hole on the lid that serves as the inlet for coffee liquid, which has an anti-drip function, so no liquid will flow out even during the dripping process.
The lid features a press-style opening mechanism.
When you open the bottom for the first time, there's an instruction sheet showing how to use it. The semi-circular part is the water tank section, and the circular part is the filter. Compared to Bonavita, De'Longhi's filter doesn't require filter paper - you can directly add coffee grounds into the filter. The movable part in the middle is the nozzle, which heats the water and adds it to the filter.
The filter is detachable and can be removed and washed directly with water after use. However, since the filter is white and coffee grounds have color, it may cause staining that's difficult to clean off.
When the water outlet at the bottom of the drip device connects with the inlet on the pot lid, liquid leakage may occur.
Usage
For those who regularly drink coffee, it's essential to ensure the freshness of the beans, as the flavor of coffee beans diminishes over time. Especially when buying beans, it's best to buy whole beans rather than pre-ground ones, as the flavor dissipates more quickly after grinding. You can buy a grinder online; I use a Little Pegasus brand grinder. For drip coffee, I usually set it to a medium-fine grind between 3-4.
Pour the ground coffee into the filter and tap it gently with your hand to level the grounds evenly, which allows hot water to distribute evenly and better extract the coffee's flavor. I typically use a coffee-to-water ratio of 1:13. If using pour-over method, you should first bloom the coffee grounds with a small amount of hot water.
During use, since the nozzle moves while spraying water and the top cover has no fixing device, I had to find something to hold it in place.
The flavor of coffee is also closely related to temperature. The base of the drip device has a continuous warming function that can keep coffee warm for about 40 minutes, allowing you to enjoy a hot cup of coffee even in cold winter.
Coffee grounds in the pot.
During operation, the nozzle's working pattern doesn't flow water evenly but rather sprays in pulses, which I feel isn't ideal. Additionally, the spraying force is somewhat strong, causing water droplets to splash outward.
Conclusion
In terms of price, the De'Longhi household large-capacity drip coffee maker isn't too expensive. Additionally, its craftsmanship and detail handling are quite good, capable of improving life quality. However, there are still many areas that need improvement from a detailed perspective, such as water flow control and the design of fixing devices. If you're not satisfied with automatic drip coffee makers, you can also buy pour-over equipment and make it yourself, which can add more fun to your life.
