Drip Coffee Machines: A Classic Brewing Method

Drip coffee machines represent a classic drip brewing process. Simple, efficient, and reliable, they are most suitable for home, office, and dormitory use. In 1965, Philips invented the first drip coffee machine, and its performance received widespread recognition, ushering in an era where drip electric coffee machines dominated the market. But do you know how to select coffee beans for drip coffee machines? What are the usage methods and precautions for drip coffee machines? If you have these needs, why not learn along with me!

Types of Drip Coffee Machines

Drip coffee machines currently on the market are divided into three types: Japanese, American, and Italian.

Japanese Coffee Pot

Also known as a siphon pot, the Japanese coffee pot features a base with an alcohol lamp and two glass balls above. It heats the water in the lower glass ball, generating steam that pushes the hot water from the lower chamber to the upper pot. When the lower pot cools, it draws the extracted coffee from the upper glass ball back down. Brewing coffee with a Japanese coffee pot feels like conducting a chemistry experiment. However, brewing requires certain skills, as you need to manually shake the alcohol lamp below to control the temperature. It's suitable for people who have time and leisure.

Japanese coffee pots require coarsely ground coffee beans and are suitable for single-origin coffee with slight acidity.

American Coffee Pot

The American coffee pot is basically an electrically heated coffee pot suitable for medium or dark-roasted coffee. It requires slightly finer grinding particles and produces a relatively bitter taste. American coffee pots have a warming function, but if kept warm for too long, the coffee easily turns sour.

Italian Coffee Pot

The Italian coffee pot is a machine that extracts coffee by quickly passing steam through coffee grounds under high pressure and high temperature. The optimal temperature for brewing coffee is between 90-98 degrees Celsius, and Italian coffee pots excel at temperature control. Home Italian coffee pots often come with a steam wand for making cappuccinos and also feature a cup warming function - this detail is very important, as cold cups significantly diminish the coffee's taste.

Differences Between Drip Coffee Machines

Drip coffee machines are also called atmospheric pressure coffee machines because the water pressure when brewing coffee is one atmosphere.

High-pressure steam coffee machines use water pressure greater than one atmosphere when brewing coffee, typically 5-19 atmospheres.

Coffee brewed with high-pressure coffee machines is more concentrated, hotter, and has a stronger taste than coffee brewed with drip coffee machines.

How to Use a Drip Coffee Machine

  1. First, preheat the coffee machine;
  2. Open the top lid of the coffee machine and pour coffee grounds into the white filter;
  3. Add water to the coffee machine's separate water tank;
  4. Place the cleaned stainless steel cup in the coffee machine, aligning it with the drip opening;
  5. Press start. The coffee machine's water tank light will turn on, and the machine will run automatically. When the coffee is ready, the machine will release some steam.

Drip Coffee Machine Usage Methods

Drip electric coffee machines include ordinary coffee machines only for brewing coffee grounds, all-in-one coffee machines that can grind coffee beans yourself, and Italian steam coffee machines that can create milk foam.

How to Use a Drip Coffee Machine at Home

Before brewing coffee daily, preheat the coffee machine first. Add half a pot of water to the water tank and turn on the power. This serves to:

  1. Push out any stale water from inside the machine;
  2. Clean the boiler and various pipes in the brewing system;
  3. Clean the coffee brewing funnel;
  4. Preheat the coffee pot.

Place a matching filter paper in the coffee machine's funnel, add 7-9 grams of coffee grounds per cup into the filter paper (be careful not to let coffee grounds get between the filter paper and funnel wall), and close the funnel door. Add 175ml of water per cup to the water tank, then turn on the power.

It's best to use filtered water to brew coffee, especially avoiding water containing chlorine. If using tap water, using a water purifier with activated carbon filtration can also prevent impurities and odors from the water.

Water can generally be divided into soft water and hard water. When converted, water with small amounts of dissolved sodium, manganese, etc., is soft water, while water with larger amounts is hard water. Most mineral water is hard water containing sodium, manganese, calcium, and magnesium. Hard water reduces the release of citric acid and significantly diminishes the coffee's flavor. Regular purified water can be used as soft water.

Drip Coffee Machine Coffee Bean Brand Recommendations

FrontStreet Coffee's freshly roasted single-origin drip coffee machine beans offer full guarantees in both brand and quality, suitable for brewing with various equipment. More importantly, they offer extremely high value-for-money. A half-pound (227 grams) bag costs only about 80-90 yuan. Calculating at 200ml per cup with a 1:15 coffee-to-water ratio, one bag can make 15 cups of specialty coffee, with each cup costing only 5-6 yuan. Compared to coffee shops that charge dozens of yuan per cup, this offers exceptional value.
