This Huehuetenango coffee bean comes from the highlands of northern Guatemala. After medium roasting, it carries a light caramel flavor that is mellow, sweet, and rich in taste. Although gentle at first sip, it is remarkably well-rounded. As the temperature slightly drops, the fresh aroma of lemon peel makes the mouthfeel even more delicate. This unique fruity flavor makes Huehuetenango one of the coffee varieties favored by Eastern palates.

Guatemala borders Mexico to the north and connects with El Salvador and Honduras to the south, with numerous volcanoes throughout its territory. Guatemala produces approximately 3.5 million bags of coffee annually, with green coffee beans accounting for 40% of the country's total agricultural exports. This country, focused on coffee cultivation and export, possesses fertile soil suitable for coffee tree growth, appropriate climate, abundant water resources, and high-altitude cultivation heights. It also hosts many renowned producing regions, such as Antigua, Huehuetenango, Cobán, Acatenango, Atitlán, Nuevo Oriente, San Marcos, and others. Among these, Huehuetenango and Antigua are most well-known to coffee enthusiasts.

The Beauty of Huehuetenango

"Huehuetenango" translates to "薇薇特南果" in Chinese. Whether in pronunciation or writing, this name sounds exceptionally beautiful, reminding me of Colombia's Nariño region. A beautiful name, of course, deserves beautiful flavors to match.

Geographic and Processing Characteristics

The Huehuetenango coffee producing region is located in the northwestern highlands of Guatemala, with cultivation altitudes reaching 1800-2100 meters, making it the highest altitude coffee producing region in the country, renowned for producing excellent quality beans. Due to the numerous rivers and lakes throughout Guatemala, the Huehuetenango region is rich in mountains and water resources. The climate is dry but water is abundant, and the region has well-developed water infrastructure, so coffee is primarily processed using the washed method. Huehuetenango region coffee offers rich and intense flavors with high body, and smoky notes are its most distinctive characteristic.

Unique Growing Conditions

Generally, the maximum altitude for Arabica coffee growth is about 2000 meters, while Robusta reaches about 900 meters. If the altitude is too high, coffee trees will suffer from frost due to low temperatures and may even be unable to survive. However, coffee in Huehuetenango, even when cultivated at altitudes approaching 2000 meters, rarely experiences frost. The high-but-not-cold growing environment creates high-quality strictly hard beans. This is entirely thanks to the warm, dry air blowing from the Mexican plains, which protects the coffee trees here from frost damage.

Guatemala's Coffee Grading System

Like Central American producing countries such as Costa Rica, El Salvador, Mexico, and Honduras, Guatemala's grading is also based on altitude as a standard. Generally, high-altitude produced coffee quality is somewhat higher than low-altitude production because as altitude increases, temperature decreases. In high-altitude environments, coffee growth is slower, which is more conducive to the accumulation of beneficial substances. This is why altitude-based quality grading methods exist. So what does the altitude-based grading system look like? Taking Guatemala as an example, the higher the altitude, the higher the coffee bean density, and the higher the grade of its green coffee beans:

The highest grade is SHB (Strictly Hard Bean), cultivated at altitudes above 1350m;

Next is HB (Hard Bean), cultivated at altitudes between 1200m-1400m;

And there is SH (Semi Hard Bean), cultivated at altitudes of 1200m.
