Background Information

Rwanda has one of the more compelling histories in the East African region. Following the "Rwandan Genocide" in the 1990s, the government promoted national reconciliation to eliminate ethnic divisions and enhance national cohesion, no longer distinguishing between ethnic groups and collectively referring to all as Rwandans. The people's enthusiasm enabled the rapid development of high-quality local coffee production. Known as the "Land of a Thousand Hills," most of Rwanda features a tropical highland climate and savanna climate, which is mild and cool. There are approximately 33,000 hectares of coffee plantations, with 500,000 people engaged in coffee cultivation. The country enjoys excellent natural conditions with high altitude and fertile volcanic soil. Rwanda is a country that can fully enjoy the harmony between soil, altitude, and climate. In this unique growing environment, Rwanda's high-quality coffee possesses distinctive taste and aroma.

Coffee is grown at altitudes between 1800-2000m and is now primarily managed by smallholder partnerships. Many of the coffees produced enjoy worldwide acclaim. The Bourbon coffee grown in Rwanda is an original variety of Arabica coffee. In 2008, at the annual professional competition of high-quality coffee hosted by the American Specialty Coffee Association (SCAA), Rwanda Aromec washed Bourbon defeated competitors including Jamaica Blue Mountain No. 1 and Sumatra Mandheling G1 Special Selection, winning the 2008 Cup of Excellence (COE) award, demonstrating the exceptional quality of Rwanda's washed Bourbon coffee.
