Introduction to Kochere Coffee Production Region in Ethiopia

Kochere is located within the Kochere "district" or county of Yirgacheffe, where coffee is grown and processed in villages or kebeles. Kochere is approximately 25 kilometers from the center of Yirgacheffe town. Coffee is harvested between November and January. The soil in this region is red-brown clay, about 1.5 meters deep.

Kochere is a small village in the southwestern part of Yirgacheffe town, near Elelek. Kochere coffee has a strong fruity, tea-like note, accompanied by citrus and stone fruit. When this is combined with natural processing, the result is expressed as red currant, lime, and raspberry lemonade.

Beyond its almost legendary status as the "birthplace" of coffee, there is much to love about Ethiopia as a producing country, including but not limited to the incredible diversity of flavors and characteristics that exist between microregions, particularly in the Sidama region within the southwestern Gedeo zone of Yirgacheffe, whose name alone evokes the idea of the world's finest coffee. Coffee is literally thriving in the lush environment that Yirgacheffe's forests provide, developing subtle floral characteristics, expressing sweetness and shimmering acidity. However, coffee has also adapted to the arid climate of Harrar in the northeastern part of the country; historically planted varieties have more chocolatey, rich aromas.

Of course, processing also plays an important role in making Ethiopian coffee distinctive—both recognizably Ethiopian and different from each other, whether washed or natural.

Until recently, coffee grown by smallholders and cooperatives in Ethiopia was required to be sold through the ECX, where lots were divided into general regions, quality (grades 1-5), and most traceability was lost. In March 2017, Ethiopia's prime minister approved a reform allowing cooperative-owned washing stations to export coffee directly, which enabled the separation of premium coffee lots, improved prices for farmers, and enhanced recognition for the best specialty coffees in Ethiopia.

Greater traceability enables us to purchase more from the same washing stations year after year, and on a more micro-level, to work with individual farmers or small groups within communities, selecting special lots.

Kochere Geographic and Economic Profile

Kochere is located in southwestern Ethiopia, containing two villages: Fisehagenet and Chelelektu. About 25 miles north is the coffee trading hub of Yirgacheffe town. The main production model locally involves small-scale farmers sending their various harvests to nearby cooperatives for unified processing. Chelelektu village has about 100,000 people who rely on coffee for their livelihood, and related production activities have become the main local economic source. Due to the income from coffee production, local living standards are somewhat better compared to many Ethiopian villages, mainly because of well-established health facilities, schools, and other infrastructure.

Kochere Coffee Characteristics

Coffee from the Kochere production region, with its excellent washed processing facilities, has always demonstrated high-level performance in the field of washed processing. It is praised for its clean, sweet characteristics with complex notes of honey and citrus.
