Latte art almost always uses Espresso, and there are special techniques for brewing Espresso! Latte art coffee beans come in both dark roast (appearing darker and more oily) and light roast varieties. Today, we're using dark roast latte art coffee beans from Central and South America, which offer rich chocolate and nutty aromas. Light roast coffee beans from Africa tend to have more acidic flavors. Making latte art requires milk foam, and espresso made from light roast beans will be more acidic and the foam will dissipate more quickly over time, making dark roast coffee beans more suitable for latte art.

Three Major Methods of Latte Art

Free Pour Method

The free pour method is considered one of the more challenging techniques in coffee latte art. The process involves frothing milk and then, while the milk and foam are still integrated, quickly pouring it into espresso. After the milk and coffee have fully blended, patterns are created on the coffee surface by manipulating the pitcher's movement to "draw" with the milk.

Hand-Drawn Pattern Method

The hand-drawn pattern method is easier for beginners. It involves blending espresso with milk first, then using a latte art pen or needle-like tool to draw specific patterns. This method can also incorporate creative variations using materials like cocoa powder, chocolate sauce, cinnamon powder, and more. Sometimes, you can complete part of the pattern using the "free pour method" before adding the final details.

Stencil Pattern Method

This is the simplest technique among all latte art methods. It involves fully blending espresso with milk, then using a spoon to create a smooth white surface with the milk foam. Next, place a stencil with your desired pattern over the coffee cup and dust cocoa powder or cinnamon powder through the stencil from about 1 centimeter above. After dusting, remove the stencil, and your pattern is complete! While simple, it's best to avoid overly complex patterns and fonts to ensure the design remains clear.
