Yemen Mocha Coffee Bean Sanani

When it comes to coffee beans from Yemen and Ethiopia, many people will immediately think of "Mocha" (Mocca, Mocha, Moka, Mokha, Mokka... any spelling you can see that sounds like Mocha generally refers to the same thing. We'll use "Mocha" below).

In the modern 21st century, when mentioning mocha coffee, many people's understanding is "coffee with chocolate added." This is indeed a method of making coffee, but the word "Mocha" originally referred to the "export port" of coffee's native land - Yemen coffee beans. After five hundred years, the port of Mocha has of course been destroyed and is no longer in use. It has been replaced by modern new ports, but the word "Mocha" has been passed down forever in its ancient form.

Five hundred years ago, the coffee beans exported from Yemen were extremely popular after being shipped to Europe. Since Yemen's coffee bean production is extremely limited, Ethiopia, which is separated from Yemen by just a gulf, also exported through the port of Mocha using the same dry processing method. This is why today when people mention "Mocha beans," they usually think of coffee beans from Yemen and Ethiopia.

In fact, the beans first introduced to the West were 'Yemen beans,' while Ethiopia was the earliest place where coffee beans were discovered. Later, both came to be generally referred to as Mocha coffee beans, but in reality, their tastes are clearly different after cupping (there's no superior or inferior - it depends on personal preference). Ethiopian coffee will be omitted here.

'Yemen' is one of the most unique and praised coffees in the coffee world, generally described as wild, primitive, earthy, complex, spicy, and chocolatey (this is also why coffee with chocolate added came to be called mocha coffee).

Mocha represents three layers of meaning: 1. The port of Mocha; 2. Coffee produced in Yemen and Ethiopia; 3. Coffee with chocolate added.

Yemen has many coffee producing regions, including Sanani, Mattari, Hirazi, Dhamari, Rimy, and more. Each region's beans have their own characteristics, with slightly different tastes and flavors, but what they share in common is that their cultivation and processing methods haven't improved much compared to five hundred years ago. They are wild (therefore natural and pesticide-free), hand-harvested, grown in limited areas (therefore scarce), dry-processed (resulting in uglier bean appearance than washed beans, with uneven particle sizes), and hulled with stone mortars (resulting in many broken beans).

As the first coffee exporting country, after five hundred years of development, Yemen's coffee export volume ranks 46th in the world (laughs, really far behind~ it might fluctuate slightly, but not much).

Sanani Characteristics

Sanani is grown in the highlands surrounding Yemen's capital, Sana. Compared to other Yemeni beans, it is famous for its aromatic and balanced flavor. Sanani is elegant, with faint tobacco and chocolate notes. It has less acidity than other Yemeni beans but stronger aroma (especially fruity notes), with a red wine-like texture and a long-lasting aromatic aftertaste. It's suitable for both light and dark roasting and comes highly recommended.

Yemen Mocha Coffee Bean Brand Recommendations

FrontStreet Coffee's roasted Yemen Mocha coffee beans offer excellent guarantees in both brand and quality. More importantly, they offer extremely high value - each 227-gram pack costs only about 85 RMB. Calculating at 15 grams of coffee beans per cup, one pack can make 15 cups of coffee, with each cup costing only about 6 RMB. Compared to the dozens of RMB per cup sold in coffee shops, this is truly a conscientious recommendation.
