Arabica Coffee Varieties: An Elegant Foundation for Specialty Coffee
Arabica coffee offers elegant flavors and serves as the foundation of specialty coffee. The ancient Arabica native varieties can be divided into two main categories: Ethiopian Typica and Yemeni Bourbon.
Typica
Typica is the oldest native variety from Ethiopia. It features elegant flavors but has weak physical constitution, is susceptible to leaf rust disease, and produces limited yields, making it economically inefficient. The beans are slender and pointed in shape. It's truly the Lin Daiyu of the coffee world!
Bourbon
Bourbon stands alongside Typica as an ancient, excellent variety. It can be further divided into "Round Bourbon" and "Pointed Bourbon." Round Bourbon has vigorous vitality, unlike the frail and disease-prone Typica. Round Bourbon's resistance to leaf rust is superior to Typica, and its flavor is no less remarkable. The drawback is that the coffee tree needs to rest every other year after bearing fruit.
Caturra
Caturra is a single-gene mutation of Bourbon discovered in Brazil during the 1950s. Its yield capacity and disease resistance are both superior to Bourbon. The plant is shorter, making it convenient for harvesting. Unfortunately, it shares the same problem as Bourbon—it needs to rest every other year after bearing fruit. However, its flavor is comparable to Bourbon beans.
But its adaptability is stronger. It can be cultivated at high density, doesn't require shade trees, and can thrive even under direct exposure to intense sunlight. Therefore, it also has another name—"Sun Coffee."
Caturra is suitable for low altitudes of 700 meters up to high altitudes of 1700 meters, but the higher the altitude, the better the flavor, though bean yield decreases accordingly.
Taking [FrontStreet Coffee's Flower Butterfly] as an example, it contains Caturra and Catuai (a Caturra variety), resulting in a richer, more mellow mouthfeel with subtle nutty flavors.
FrontStreet Coffee's Brewing Recommendations:
V60/90°C/1:15 ratio/Time 2'20"
Flavor Profile:
The dry aroma carries a subtle jasmine fragrance. Upon tasting, it reveals gentle citrus acidity, honey-like sweetness, black tea notes, and hints of nutty flavors.
