Peru's Coffee Heritage

Peru began exporting coffee in 1887 and is now the eighth-largest coffee-producing country and the world's largest exporter of organic coffee, with an annual volume of 2 million bags, accounting for 5% of total exports. More than one-third of the nation's coffee is grown in the Cajamarca region in the north, as well as in the southern regions of Apurímac and Cusco. Farms are primarily operated by small farmers with an average size not exceeding 5 hectares, and the most common varieties are Bourbon, Typica, Pache, and Caturra.

Organic Coffee Excellence

Peruvian coffee beans are grown at altitudes of up to 2,200 meters and benefit from many unique microclimates. Much of the coffee is collected together for processing and then sold through cooperatives, which is currently the mainstream approach for specialty coffee. Over the past 10 years, the EL GUABO community has developed small-batch coffee beans based on organic principles, frequently holding competitions to reward and certify growers.

Cajamarca's Unique Growing Conditions

Cajamarca (also known as Chanchamayo) is one of Peru's nine coffee-producing regions and a quite renowned origin, with an average altitude of approximately 1,250-1,500 meters. Located in a rainforest region, although considered tropical, the high altitude results in an average annual temperature between 17-30°C and annual rainfall of about 1,500-2,000 mm. These geographical conditions are quite suitable for coffee cultivation.

The poverty among Peruvian farmers has led to the following circumstances, as they cannot afford chemical fertilizers and pesticides:

Characteristics of Peruvian Coffee

1) Basically all coffee is organically grown, washed with mountain spring water, thus possessing a rich, mellow, slightly fruity acidity with smoothness that leaves an endless aftertaste.

2) Original varieties are preserved, especially Typica (the original variety of Blue Mountain coffee).

3) Although each farmer's production is relatively small, the green bean quality is excellent. Compared to coffee from Central America at similar altitudes, Peruvian beans generally have lower acidity but consistently good sweetness.
