Introduction to Bourbon Coffee

Bourbon coffee (French: Café Bourbon) is a type of coffee produced from the Bourbon cultivar of Arabica coffee trees. Bourbon coffee was originally cultivated in Réunion, which was called Bourbon Island before 1789. It was later occupied by France and connected to the African continent and Latin America. It is now one of the two most popular Arabica coffee production regions in the world. Bourbon coffee is typically grown at altitudes of 3,500 to 6,500 feet (1,062-1,972 meters).

Bourbon Variety Origins

The Bourbon variety is native to Bourbon Island in the Indian Ocean (now called Réunion Island) and is a sub-variety that mutated from Typica. Along with Typica, it belongs to the oldest existing coffee varieties. When the green fruit ripens, it presents a bright red color, while the Yellow Bourbon variety is a hybrid of Bourbon with other varieties. Due to its lower yield and relatively poor resistance to wind and rain, it has not been widely cultivated. However, when grown in high-altitude areas, it exhibits excellent flavor performance and has become more common in recent years.

Yellow Bourbon

Yellow Bourbon, with yellow ripe fruits, was first discovered in Brazil and is now mainly grown in Brazil. It is generally believed to have mutated from a cross between red-fruited Bourbon and a yellow-fruited Typica variety called "Amerelo de Botocatu."

Among the many coffee varieties in Brazil, Yellow Bourbon is one of the outstanding varieties in terms of quality. While regular Bourbon changes from green to yellow to red, Yellow Bourbon only maintains its yellow appearance. Yellow Bourbon grown in high-altitude environments and processed through natural drying methods has excellent flavor.

Flavor Characteristics

Flavor profile: Sweet and smooth fruit sweetness, distinct nutty flavor, balanced and gentle acidity, weak and clean bitterness, containing rich chocolate aroma and nutty flavors, with a bright and refreshing taste.
