Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee Overview
Jamaica's Blue Mountain is the highest mountain in the western Caribbean Sea (2,256 meters high). The annual maximum production of Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee beans is 2,400 tons. Among these, WALLENFORD, the state-owned estate, is the most important and famous coffee plantation. WALLENFORD, MAVIS BANK, SILVER HILL, MOY HALL, and GOLD CUP are relatively well-known brands.
Coffee production, like general agricultural products, is greatly affected by weather conditions. In 1969, Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee was affected by hurricanes, causing production difficulties. Japan's UCC company provided assistance and introduced ecological farming methods.
To express gratitude for the Japanese company's assistance, Jamaica signed a contract with Japan in 1972, providing 90% of the annual production to the Japanese market. The remaining 10%, about 3,500 barrels (70 kg oak barrels), is released to the market for sale (also the only coffee that maintains oak barrel packaging). Therefore, Blue Mountain coffee is extremely rare in the market, establishing its dominant position in the coffee market.
In addition to the limited production, presenting the complete flavor profile of Blue Mountain coffee—slightly acidic with less bitterness—is also more difficult to master in brewing techniques. Therefore, some baristas use this as a demonstration of their skill, presenting the balanced nature of Blue Mountain coffee through technique.
Roasting
Blue Mountain coffee should be roasted using medium roast (city roast) method. This allows the coffee beans' oils to surface, creating a glossy brown appearance. It both preserves the original flavor of the coffee beans and appropriately releases aromas, achieving the optimal balance of acidity, sweetness, and bitterness, with distinct flavor characteristics.
Market
Blue Mountain coffee is a famous coffee variety with extremely limited production, making it expensive. Blue Mountain is located in the coffee belt between 25 degrees north and south latitude. The quantity of genuine Blue Mountain coffee is very small, with annual production of only about 40,000 bags (approximately 2.4 million kg). The relatively cheaper "Blue Mountain Blend" or "Blue Mountain Style" coffees on the market are typically blends made primarily with high-quality Colombian beans, intended to imitate the taste of Blue Mountain.
Recommended Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee Bean Brands
FrontStreet Coffee's roasted Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee beans offer excellent guarantees in both brand and quality. More importantly, they offer extremely high value for money. A half-pound (100g) package costs only around 158 RMB. Calculating at 15g of coffee powder per cup, one package can make 6 cups of coffee, with each cup costing only about 25 RMB. Compared to coffee shops that often charge hundreds of RMB per cup, this is truly a conscientious recommendation.
