Indonesia: Volcanoes, Earthquakes, and Paradise Islands

Indonesia~home to volcanoes and earthquakes😱...the resort island of Bali...beautiful mountains and waters, and excellent coffee☕!

Indonesia is a large archipelagic country composed of numerous volcanic islands, naturally possessing excellent coffee growing environments and latitudes. Each island has different characteristics due to its unique terrain and climate.

Indonesian Coffee Growing Islands

Indonesian islands that grow coffee include:

Sumatra, Sulawesi, Java, Sumbawa, Flores, and more...

Among these, Sumatra Island is Indonesia's primary coffee growing region, and the most famous Mandheling coffee comes from here!

Sumatra's Coffee Regions

Sumatra Island is divided into two main regions: first is Aceh in North Sumatra, and second is Linton around Lake Toba in the south-central area. Aceh's most famous growing area is the Gayo mountains surrounding Lake Tawar, which is also the main Mandheling production region.

Note: Mandheling is a coffee name, not a region. It refers to Arabica coffee from northern Sumatra, named after the local Mandheling people.

The Linton region is located on the southwest side of Lake Toba, Sumatra's largest lake, and is an important source of Indonesian specialty coffee.

Java and Sulawesi Coffee Heritage

Java Island was the first island in Indonesia to grow coffee beans, introduced around the 16th century by the Dutch East India Company. Sulawesi Island is home to another famous Indonesian coffee "Toraja," located in the southern mountainous region of Sulawesi on the equator. Because Dutch colonists brought Arabica raw beans early on, it became world-famous at the time as Celebes Kalossi. Later, Japanese people entered Toraja, improving the local coffee industry and quality, making Toraja famous throughout Asia.

Indonesian Coffee Processing and Characteristics

Indonesian coffee beans are mainly processed using the semi-washed method, graded by defect bean ratios and the number of times defects are manually selected. The coffee we choose comes from Mandheling in the Aceh Gayo mountain region, at an altitude of approximately 1600 meters. After three manual selections, it uses the Sumatran semi-washed processing method, resulting in rich aroma, relatively thick body, and sweet aftertaste.

Recommended Indonesian Coffee Bean Brands

The Indonesian coffee beans from West Java honey process, roasted by FrontStreet Coffee, offer excellent guarantees in both brand and quality. More importantly, they provide exceptional value - a half-pound (227 grams) package costs only about 118 yuan. Calculating at 15 grams per cup, one package can make 15 cups of coffee, with each cup costing only about 7 yuan. Compared to café prices that often reach dozens of yuan per cup, this is truly a conscientious recommendation.
