You don't need a coffee machine costing tens of thousands, nor a grinder costing several thousand to brew good coffee.
Drip bag coffee just needs to be opened, pour hot water, and it's ready to drink - truly super convenient (and if the packaging looks good, it's also very suitable for gifts!).
However, there are actually small tips hidden in how to buy and brew drip bag coffee.
Below, let me guide you through learning how to simply use drip bags to brew a cup of coffee that doesn't lose to coffee shops.
Key Points for Buying Drip Bag Coffee: Fresh Roasting
After coffee is ground into powder, it starts to have extensive contact with air. Its shelf life is shorter than unground roasted beans, and the optimal tasting period is approximately within one month after roasting. When choosing drip bag coffee, you must select one that is freshly roasted within one month. Beyond one month, the flavor will deteriorate, and there may even be toxins that are harmful to your body.
Three Key Points to Make Drip Bag Coffee Taste Better:
1. Use a Gooseneck Kettle Instead of a Water Dispenser for Pouring
Many people brew drip bags by directly holding them under a water dispenser, turning on the hot water, and pouring it down. But NO NO... If you want the coffee to taste better, the water flow should be gentle and stable to avoid extracting too many unpleasant flavors. Simply using a gooseneck kettle can create a stable water flow, reducing the extraction of uncomfortable harsh flavors and achieving more ideal flavor.
2. Proportion Control is Very Important!
Many people wonder, does it make a difference with powder-to-water ratios of 1:10, 1:15, 1:20...? My answer is: it makes a huge difference.
Whether too concentrated or too diluted, it will directly affect the drinking experience.
Getting the proportion right... is extremely important for coffee brewing!
When brewing drip bag coffee, it's recommended to use a measuring cup with markings instead of a regular mug to more precisely control the ratio.
3. Use a Thermometer to Measure Water Temperature
Water temperature is one of the four major variables in coffee extraction, and the level of water temperature will also directly affect extraction.
Although drip bag coffee doesn't need to be as precise as pour-over, requiring water at a specific temperature, the only recommendation for making your drip bag taste better is "do not exceed 95°C & do not go below 80°C."
The reason is that water temperature that's too high can easily dissolve the fiber components in the coffee powder, causing the coffee to taste grainy and uncomfortable. To avoid water temperature that's too high, you can use an electronic thermometer to measure the water temperature. If you don't have a thermometer, generally after pouring boiling water into a gooseneck kettle and waiting about 2 minutes, the water temperature will drop below 95 degrees. Of course, the temperature shouldn't be too low, otherwise the drip bag coffee might end up with little flavor after brewing.
Mastering the above three key points, upgrading your drip bag coffee's flavor by one level is not a problem.
If you like to add milk, you can increase the ratio when brewing drip bag coffee (simply put, brew it stronger). Then, using a coffee-to-milk ratio of 1:8, add warm milk (you can also use a milk frother to foam the milk), and it will become a delicious café au lait/latte.
FrontStreet Coffee's Recommended Drip Bag Brewing Parameters:
Water temperature 90°C, use a shallow coffee cup, brewing while soaking can increase body. With a powder-to-water ratio of 1:15, 10 grams of powder with 150 grams of water is sufficient.
