The Truth About Blue Mountain Coffee
Blue Mountain Coffee is arguably the most famous single-origin coffee, with a long and storied history. It could be said that even if you've never had specialty coffee, you've heard of Blue Mountain Coffee.
I wonder if anyone might think: "Wow—so few people have actually tried it, so Blue Mountain Coffee must be incredibly precious, so I absolutely must try it."
But!! While scarcity often creates value, and coffee is no exception, expensive doesn't necessarily mean delicious. Moreover, if the scarcity you're encountering represents a market flooded with counterfeits, making genuine products hard to find, then the truth about your insistence on trying it might be:
Truth 1: You spend a lot of money to drink genuine garbage
Truth 2: You spend a lot of money to drink fake products
Truth 3: You don't spend much money to drink fake products
So, if you're a beginner in specialty coffee with infinite dreams and aspirations about Blue Mountain, wanting to try this legendary world's number one coffee, then I suggest you at least use the following methods to reduce the possibility of drinking fake or inferior products:
How to Avoid Fake Blue Mountain Coffee
1. Almost all Blue Mountain Coffee sold in major retail channels is fake. They generally use terms like "Blue Mountain flavor," "Blue Mountain impression," "Blue Mountain blend," "Blue Mountain style," "Blue Mountain blend" to confuse consumers. These are not genuine Blue Mountain.
Even Japan's UCC, which in the past claimed to import large quantities of Blue Mountain, their UCC Premium Blue Mountain Coffee Beans sold in general channels—rest assured, there are absolutely no Blue Mountain beans inside.
As for formidable retailers like COSTCO, selling large bags of Blue Mountain blend for 450 yuan—needless to say, if there's real Blue Mountain inside, I'll let you do whatever you want.
2. Some channels sell "Premium Blue Mountain" or "National Treasure Blue Mountain"—if the half-pound price is below 1000, it's basically lower-grade secondary beans from near Blue Mountain that have managed to get the Blue Mountain name to混一混 (mix around).
3. In coffee shops, if a cup of Blue Mountain costs less than 300, you basically can't drink genuine Blue Mountain either.
Additionally, nowadays if you're not in an estate-level coffee shop (characterized by single-origin coffees with extremely long and incomprehensible names), the chance of getting real Blue Mountain is almost zero.
Moreover, the current cost-performance ratio of Blue Mountain isn't really that high, so specialty coffee shops that truly understand coffee value generally don't stock much (or stock very little). After all, with high costs but flavor grade not quite reaching that level, they're generally more likely to be used for pilgrimage or selling prestige.
