Last Updated: 2026/01/27, Blue Mountain Coffee originates from Jamaica's Mavis Bank Central Factory (MBCF), a coffee enterprise with 150 years of history. Approximately 40% of the total Blue Mountain Coffee production is processed through this enterprise, making it the main producer of Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee, this world-renowned brand.

Authentic Jamaica Blue Mountain No. 1 coffee presents rich dark chocolate and caramel notes, soft berry-like acidity, and a refreshing sweetness reminiscent of sugarcane. The perfect balance of sour, sweet, bitter, and mellow flavors creates a memorable aftertaste in every cup.

What Makes Authentic Blue Mountain Coffee Beans?

FrontStreet Coffee emphasizes authentic Blue Mountain coffee because its production is rare and costly, leading to high prices. Coupled with its renowned reputation, some unscrupulous merchants have seen a "business opportunity" by marketing lower quality dark roast blends or instant coffee under the Blue Mountain name, misleading consumers. To identify genuine Blue Mountain coffee, one must first understand its distinct characteristics.

According to Jamaica's "Coffee Industry Regulation Act," Blue Mountain coffee is primarily grown in four administrative regions: St. Andrew, St. Thomas, Portland, and St. Mary. The act explicitly stipulates that only Typica coffee grown at elevations between 910-1,700 meters can be named Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee. The steep terrain of the high-altitude Blue Mountains makes management and harvesting difficult, with high labor costs, resulting in relatively expensive coffee. If the "Blue Mountain beans" you purchase cost only dozens of yuan, they are likely counterfeit. For reference, FrontStreet Coffee sells Blue Mountain No. 1 coffee beans at 158 yuan per 100g package.

In terms of aroma, Blue Mountain coffee possesses rich, dense, and lasting chocolate and roasted hazelnut notes that are difficult to match with typical dark roast blends. In flavor, authentic Blue Mountain coffee achieves perfect balance between sour, sweet, bitter, and aromatic notes, with no single taste overwhelming others, while its body and sweetness are perfectly calibrated.

If we cannot distinguish through the above two points, we should ask the merchant to present Blue Mountain-related certificates and the wooden barrels containing the raw beans. Jamaica Blue Mountain is the only coffee-producing region that uses wooden barrels for packaging raw beans. FrontStreet Coffee's Blue Mountain No. 1 also comes with quality certification from the Jamaica Coffee Industry Board, an authorized sales certificate from the Blue Mountain coffee manufacturer, and a Jamaica Blue Mountain certificate of origin. These documentary proofs and handcrafted wooden barrels are displayed at FrontStreet Coffee's physical stores. FrontStreet Coffee's Blue Mountain No. 1 is produced by Clifton Mountain Estate, using traditional washed processing, which is also the most common method for processing Blue Mountain raw beans.

Why Is Blue Mountain Coffee So Expensive?

Before the 1960s, Jamaica's coffee beans were already highly popular in the entire specialty coffee market. In 1969, Jamaica was severely affected by hurricane disasters, causing various industries to fall into difficulties, and the coffee industry was no exception. At this time, Japan's UCC company provided financial assistance to Jamaica's coffee industry and introduced scientific ecological cultivation methods. The Jamaican government, grateful for the help, signed a 30-year contract with Japan, agreeing to allocate 90% of premium Blue Mountain coffee quota to Japan, with the remaining 10% distributed to European and American countries.

During this period, Blue Mountain coffee was not fully consumed within the Japanese domestic market, so they sold portions of it at high prices to other Asian countries and regions. Coupled with intensified promotional efforts by the Japanese, coffee professionals in neighboring countries began to pursue Blue Mountain coffee, such as Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Since 2000, the "Blue Mountain craze" has gradually spread to mainland China, leading to the phenomenon of high prices and scarce availability of Blue Mountain coffee.

Jamaica Coffee History

In 2008, during the global economic crisis, Jamaica attempted to sell Blue Mountain coffee to more countries, coinciding with the expiration of its agreement with Japan, distributing more Blue Mountain coffee quota to other countries. With the expansion of China's coffee market demand, many Chinese merchants can now directly import Blue Mountain coffee beans from Jamaica. FrontStreet Coffee's Jamaica Blue Mountain No. 1 is produced by the local historic Clifton Mountain Estate using traditional washed processing.

Characteristics of Washed Blue Mountain No. 1 Coffee Beans

Blue Mountain coffee belongs to the ancient Typica variety. When grown at higher altitudes, Typica displays more prominent flavor characteristics. Additionally, the Typica variety has poor disease resistance and is prone to death, significantly affecting yields and requiring more careful human attention. Furthermore, Blue Mountain's terrain is not flat, making management and harvesting very difficult, thus requiring highly skilled harvesting personnel. After harvesting, coffee cherries are immediately transported to processing plants for washed processing to remove the coffee fruit pulp and dry.

Hand-harvested coffee cherries are placed in water, with floating defective beans being sorted out. Next, the pulp and fruit skin are removed, allowing the beans to ferment in pools for 12-18 hours. Then, the fermented beans are placed in pools and moved back and forth, using the friction between beans and water flow to wash the coffee beans until smooth and clean. Subsequently, they are spread under the sun for dehydration drying until moisture content reaches 12-14%, at which point they can be packaged and stored in warehouses before being sent for quality inspection before export. Washed processing significantly reduces defect rates while better preserving the inherent aroma of Blue Mountain coffee beans, resulting in cleaner taste profiles.

Before export, Blue Mountain raw beans undergo strict quality inspection and grading. The Jamaica Coffee Industry Board (CIB), authorized by the Jamaican government, conducts detailed testing based on coffee export grade standards, examining factors such as bean size, color, defects, and flavor. First, Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee must maintain a defect rate below 3%, and is classified into four grades based on bean size. The highest grade, Jamaica Blue Mountain No. 1 raw beans, measures 17 mesh or larger with moisture content around 10-12.5%. After roasting, it presents perfectly balanced acidity, sweetness, bitterness, body, and aroma—this is the classic Blue Mountain flavor profile.

How to Brew Authentic Blue Mountain No. 1 Coffee?

With the popularization of specialty coffee culture, many coffee enthusiasts now have the conditions to brew coffee at home. Therefore, after purchasing Blue Mountain No. 1 coffee beans, some friends consult FrontStreet Coffee on how to brew it well. Here, FrontStreet Coffee will share its extraction approach based on how it's prepared in their stores~

First, FrontStreet Coffee confirms the freshness of the coffee beans before brewing. If the roast date is more than a month old, FrontStreet Coffee will choose fresher coffee beans. This is because coffee beans have an optimal flavor window after roasting, and coffee aroma accelerates its loss over time, making it difficult to present the original flavors during brewing. This is also why FrontStreet Coffee insists on only shipping coffee freshly roasted within 5 days—FrontStreet Coffee hopes every customer can enjoy the complete flavor window of coffee beans.

FrontStreet Coffee typically prioritizes KONO drippers when brewing predominantly bitter-tasting coffee beans, aiming to highlight the coffee's rich body. The upper part of the KONO dripper allows better adhesion with filter paper. Compared to V60 drippers, the extraction method is primarily immersion-based, increasing the overall concentration of coffee and enhancing its body. Similarly, KONO drippers are also suitable for brewing Brazil Queen Estate coffee beans and Golden Mandheling coffee beans. Additionally, Blue Mountain No. 1 coffee is medium roast, meaning the internal bean structure is more porous than light roast coffee, resulting in better water absorption. To avoid over-extraction, FrontStreet Coffee chooses a grind size with 75% passing rate through No. 20 standard sieves, along with 88°C water temperature, combined with FrontStreet Coffee's customary three-stage pouring method.

FrontStreet Coffee's in-store brewing parameters for Blue Mountain No. 1 are:

Dripper: KONO dripper
Water temperature: 88°C
Coffee-to-water ratio: 1:15
Coffee grounds: 15g
Grind size: EK43s - setting 10.5 (75% passing rate through No. 20 standard sieve)

FrontStreet Coffee first wets the KONO dripper, then aligns and places the filter paper for better fit with the dripper. After pouring out the water from the sharing pot, 15g of coffee grounds are added. Using 30g of water for bloom for 30 seconds, FrontStreet Coffee begins pouring in small circular motions from the center until reaching 125g, then starts the next segment. When the coffee bed level drops to half the dripper's height, FrontStreet Coffee pours the second segment using the same technique until reaching 225g. Once all dripping is complete, the dripper can be removed.
