It's hard to imagine the director of a stock exchange running a coffee farm. However, Roberto Brenes, the owner of Panama's Finca Auromar, is actually the CEO of the Panama Stock Exchange, Inc.!
After graduating from high school, young Brenes went to New York for his studies, entering Columbia University for his MBA. After graduation, he returned to his home country and worked in banking. During Panama's dictatorship under President Noriega, public resentment was widespread, and Roberto, having received an American education, openly criticized the current political situation, twice being exiled abroad by the Noriega government. During his time away from Panama, he entered the investment banking industry in South America for experience. It wasn't until the Noriega regime was overthrown and Panama was liberated from dictatorship that Brenes returned to his country and joined the stock exchange. In addition to his career, he is passionate about sports, still enthusiastically participating in triathlon competitions at the age of 68. But compared to the stock exchange and triathlons, what truly made him famous beyond Panama was actually his coffee farm.
In 2013, in the globally watched "Best of Panama" competition, he won the championship in the most competitive Geisha category, while the most famous La Esmeralda farm only placed third. The champion was the "Ironman" Geisha coffee, and from the name, one can probably guess that this bean comes from Brenes's farm. The international jury gave it a score of 91.70 points, with flavor notes: "sweet, peach, citrus, floral, elegant, sweet chocolate, flower petals." In 2016, he once again won the championship in the exotic natural category.
Auromar is located in the Piedra Candela/Volcan region in the northwest corner of Chiriquí Province, Panama, only two kilometers from the Costa Rican border. The farm covers 31 hectares, of which 16 hectares are rainforest protection areas, with altitudes between the farm's highest points of 1700-1775 meters. The area专门用于生产咖啡的海拔在1485-1700米之间,占15公顷,种植区域的平均海拔为1625米,年均气温16-25度,雨量3500毫米。
Currently, the actual area of the farm planted with coffee is approximately only 15 hectares. The shade plants are avocado trees, and the coffee grows in a semi-shaded environment, which is excellent. The coffee varieties planted on the farm include Geisha and Tekisic. After the cherries are picked, they are sent to Café de Eleta for processing, which is only 3 kilometers from the farm. Café de Eleta first manually selects the cherries, and most of the processing methods are washed or semi-washed. After the green beans are processed, there is a modern cupping laboratory to directly test the results of the coffee processing.
At Auromar, the natural-processed Geisha coffee is an extremely small special batch, with fruits coming from 4-5 year old coffee trees, providing a richer flavor profile.
