Panama Coffee: The Rise of Geisha
Panama coffee has been the most popular coffee origin in Central America for the past 5-6 years. The main reason is the Geisha coffee variety cultivated by Hacienda La Esmeralda, operated by the Peterson family. This Geisha coffee has driven coffee enthusiasts crazy, who call it the world's top coffee bean. Hacienda La Esmeralda has won the Panama coffee competition for many years and is hailed as Panama's national treasure.
The Peterson family's Hacienda La Esmeralda operates coffee farms in a corporate manner, centered around Mario Caballeriza Naranjo (three production areas on the same high mountain: Mario at approximately 1500-1650 meters altitude, Caballeriza at approximately 1500 meters, Naranjo at approximately 1450 meters). They acquire nearby coffee farms with different altitudes, terrain, and soil (volcanic terrain), using the most advanced and meticulous production and cultivation techniques with strict management to produce extremely high-quality Geisha coffee. Additionally, the Geisha variety is perfectly suited to Panama's natural conditions, so the Geisha coffee produced by Hacienda La Esmeralda is as precious as pearls, bean by bean.

Esmeralda Special 2010
Hacienda La Esmeralda is currently the only single estate in Panama that opens global bidding. The reason is simply that Hacienda La Esmeralda's Geisha is too famous and its quality is exceptionally elegant and delicate, attracting international coffee buyers, roasters, and enthusiasts to compete for fresh purchases. Because it's so sought-after, Hacienda La Esmeralda decided to open global bidding as a single estate.
This year's Esmeralda Special Auction features 7 batches of Geisha coffee beans from 5 production areas open for international bidding, in order: Mario, Baru, Caballeriza, Naranjo, Colga. The Mario production area is named after monthly festivals based on harvest months. Carnaval (harvested in February) is the carnival held every February, San Jose (harvested in March) commemorates Saint San Jose on March 19th every year, and Enero (harvested in January) means January in Spanish.

Bidding Rules
- Bidding opens for one hour. After one hour, if any buyer bids on any batch within two minutes, all batches will reset to two minutes. This continues until all buyers stop raising their prices.
- The coffee from each production area is evenly divided into 300-pound batches, so ES1-01 will not differ from ES1-02. The particularly high price of ES1-01 may be due to Korean psychological factors. In fact, the price differences for each large batch, such as ES5-Caballeriza's Geisha, are not significant.
