Jamaica: Blue Mountain Coffee
The world-renowned Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee can be called the king of coffees, but only coffee grown in the high-altitude mountain regions above 5,000 feet in Jamaica's Blue Mountains can truly be called Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee. Coffee beans also produced in the Blue Mountains but from lower-altitude regions, or from other producing areas in Jamaica, although they come from Jamaica, cannot be called Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee.
There are two main reasons for its high price: First, its excellent quality, with perfect balance of fragrance, sweetness, and richness, with moderate acidity and bitterness, making it the finest among the finest. Many people think Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee is good because of its rich aroma, but in fact, if you are accustomed to heavy-bodied coffees like Mandheling or Italian-style espresso, or if you drink coffee excessively, it's recommended not to spend a lot of money to try it easily, otherwise you will be greatly disappointed. Its flavor is refreshing with a slight acidity, that acidity being a high-quality acidic taste unique to premium Arabica coffee beans that won't make you feel unpleasant but rather leaves an endless aftertaste. You can drink it completely without sugar or creamer, and it tastes very smooth. You will sip it mouthful by mouthful, unconsciously finishing it before you even have time to add sugar or creamer, and you might even feel that adding sugar or creamer would be a waste.
Second, limited production. Because only coffee from the high-altitude regions of the Blue Mountains can be called Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee, and it undergoes strict screening, the quantity is limited. Additionally, Japan has been purchasing in large quantities for years, so the amount available in China is extremely scarce, making the price several times higher than ordinary coffee.
In the past, we often heard people say that there was no real Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee in China. Perhaps this was true in the past, but in fact, there are now extremely small quantities of pure Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee available on the market. However, even experts find it difficult to distinguish between real and fake. It's common to see Colombian beans, which resemble Blue Mountain Coffee, used to confuse consumers, or even situations where oversized coffee beans are claimed to be Blue Mountain Coffee. In fact, genuine pure Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee beans are only slightly larger than ordinary coffee beans. So how should consumers choose? The only way is to carefully select reputable coffee companies. Of course, its price is much higher than other coffees, and different coffee companies quote very different prices, but consumers should not measure solely by price. A higher price doesn't necessarily mean better or purer coffee, otherwise you might spend a lot of money and still be taken advantage of.
And what about the Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee we drink in coffee shops or the Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee beans we buy? Are they not real Blue Mountain Coffee? That's right, most of them indeed are not. So why are they called Blue Mountain Coffee? In the past, there were indeed no channels to import real Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee in China, and the price was much higher than other coffees, but there was still market demand. Therefore, other coffee beans were blended to approximate the taste of Blue Mountain Coffee, so they should actually be called blended Blue Mountain Coffee. Of course, some companies claim that their blend contains a certain percentage of pure Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee beans. However, this claim is not practical, because if pure Blue Mountain Coffee beans were really mixed in, the cost would be too high, and there is no such market price for it, making it completely uneconomical. Moreover, truly adding pure Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee would be a terrible waste of pure Blue Mountain Coffee. However, the Blue Mountain Coffee on the market is still slightly more expensive than ordinary coffee beans. If it's from a conscientious company, since the price is higher than ordinary coffee beans, they should use coffee beans superior to regular single-origin coffee for blending, making the cost naturally higher. But if they use ordinary single-origin coffee mixed to blend so-called "Blue Mountain Coffee," wouldn't that be no different from a regular blend?
