Panama Coffee Heritage

Coffee was introduced to Panama in 1780, when Europeans brought the first Typica varieties, and its cultivation gradually became widespread. Panama coffee is exceptionally smooth, with full-bodied yet lightweight beans and perfectly balanced acidity. Its premium coffee beans feature pure, distinctive flavors, and medium roasting is recommended. Many buyers enjoy using Panamanian beans for blends, and nearly all premium coffee beans are exported to France and Finland.

Growing Regions

Nearly all regions of Panama cultivate coffee, with the Boquete western region near Costa Rica being particularly renowned for producing many premium coffees. Most coffee varieties are Typica and Caturra, grown under the shade of trees in virgin forests. The slow growth results in harder coffee beans, and high-altitude beans (S.H.B) are typically hand-harvested in batches when fully ripe. Beans are sorted by consistent size to maintain excellent raw bean quality, resulting in distinctly refreshing floral aromas and clean, pure flavors.

Acapa Estate

Acapa Estate, also known as the Presidential Estate, derives its name from the owner being Panama's former female president. Acapa Estate is also an award-winning estate in the annual "Best of Panama Cupping Competition." The estate uses shade-grown cultivation and preserves virgin forests within its grounds, avoiding large-scale deforestation to accelerate coffee growth while protecting bird ecosystems and habitats. This approach also maintains soil moisture, provides shade for coffee trees, ensures consistent development environments for coffee cherries, and preserves excellent growing quality. Beyond shade cultivation, Acapa employs manual batch harvesting based on coffee cherry ripeness, resulting in more consistent and stable bean quality, with more uniform beans than Sitton Estate and Carmen Estate.

Tasting Notes

Dry Aroma:

Fruity notes, nutty sweetness, berries, floral notes, tea, with hints of essential oil aroma.

Wet Aroma:

Berries, caramel, floral notes, sweet spices, cream, and buttery notes.

Cupping Notes:

Distinct body upon entry with delicate acidity transitions. Notes of grapefruit, white grapes, malt sweetness, and berry acidity. Milk candy sweetness, green apple, excellent buttery body texture. Sweet floral notes in the nose with tea-like qualities. Long, sweet finish with persistent sweetness.

Brewing Experience:

The beans are lightly roasted with a pale color and uniform size - visually beautiful. The dry grounds exhibit only nutty aromas; the wet aroma reveals caramel and buttery notes. The first sip presents the coffee's inherent rich flavor clearly - not bitter, not astringent, and not overly acidic. With subsequent sips, gentle acidity gradually emerges, carrying very mild berry notes. In the later stages of drinking, the acidity remains smooth and non-stimulating.
