Caribbean Coffee History

The entire history of Caribbean coffee is closely connected to Spanish colonization and migration. In the 18th century, coffee from various regions was not particularly important, as the primary work focused on planting sugarcane in fertile valleys. In the early 19th century (around 1800), during European turmoil, residents of the French Mediterranean island of Corsica migrated to Puerto Rico. Since the valley lands were already occupied by Spanish immigrants, they chose to settle in the southwestern mountainous areas of the island, mostly near Yauco City. Through their efforts and determination, coffee cultivation brought them considerable returns. By the 1860s, they dominated the island's coffee industry, and Puerto Rico's coffee bean production ranked sixth in the world. The coffee trees planted by those Corsican immigrants in the highlands produced fruit considered as premium selections. The origin of Yauco Selecto coffee beans can be primarily traced back to this period. However, in 1898, two powerful hurricanes severely damaged Puerto Rico. These hurricanes devastated the local coffee industry, and farmers had to wait two years for crops to recover. During this period, the United States became interested in Puerto Rico's sugar production, and European countries no longer imposed tariffs on Puerto Rican coffee beans as colonial products. These factors heavily impacted Puerto Rican coffee.

Premium Caribbean Coffee Varieties

The Caribbean is a passionate, romantic, and mysterious sea region where many excellent coffees thrive around this circular area. Jamaican Blue Mountain, Dominican Republic, Cuban Crystal Mountain, and Puerto Rican Yauco are all among the world's most famous, rare, and expensive coffees. These island beans offer a light milky aroma and elegant floral notes, with delicate and gentle acidity. Although they still face the challenge of water loss caused by the humid island climate, their overall quality represents first-class coffee beans. Puerto Rican coffee is not easily available on the market primarily due to low production volumes, with most exports going to Europe. Additionally, damage from harsh climate hurricanes adversely affects coffee crops, resulting in years with no coffee available for purchase.

Puerto Rico Yauco

Puerto Rico Yauco and Jamaica are both part of the Greater Antilles, located in the Central American Atlantic region, and are renowned producers of island coffee beans. This batch comes from the central mountain range of Puerto Rico, with an average altitude of 914 meters. Puerto Rican coffee has approximately two hundred years of history, starting in 1736. Initially, coffee here was not the main economic crop, with sugarcane being the primary focus. Around 1800, due to European turmoil, residents of the French Mediterranean island of Corsica migrated to Puerto Rico. Since the valley lands were already occupied by Spanish immigrants, they chose to settle in the southwestern mountainous areas of the island, near Yauco City. For survival, they began cultivating different crops, and coffee cultivation brought them good income. By 1860, the coffee industry had become the most important export economic crop locally. Yauco was also a well-known coffee variety in early years. In recent years, due to a shift toward domestic market orientation, it has become quite rare.
