The Khanga Cooperative is one of the cooperatives within this union, cultivating 300,000 coffee trees across 75 hectares. With bright acidity, rich tropical fruit aromas, and citrus and lemon fruit acids that enhance the coffee's liveliness, it is a coffee with intense tropical wild characteristics.
Malawi: Africa's Hidden Coffee Gem
Malawi is a small landlocked country in southeastern Africa. Its coffee is predominantly grown in the northern highland regions, though production volumes are not substantial. Despite being landlocked, the map reveals a very large lake on its northeastern border - Lake Malawi, which serves as the natural boundary separating Malawi from neighboring countries.
Compared to Kenyan coffee, Malawi's coffee offers considerable sweetness and aroma, while its acidity presents a different style characterized by lower, deeper notes. If Kenyan acidity were compared to high notes, Malawi's acidity would feel like mid to low tones. All coffee cultivated in Malawi is of the Arabica variety and processed using the washed method. It ranks as the country's ninth-largest export product, though it accounts for only about 5% of total export value.
What makes it particularly special is that despite limited export quantities, its coffee production and marketing are handled by locally established companies that independently manage production, processing, and sales operations, rather than being government-controlled as in Kenya's coffee consolidation system. Under this independent operational model, Malawi's coffee quality has maintained consistently high standards, making it one of the most favored coffees among traders.
