Malawi: The Warm Heart of African Coffee

Malawi is a small landlocked country in southeastern Africa. Its coffee is primarily grown in the northern highland regions, though production volumes are not large. Despite being landlocked, the map shows a massive lake on its northeastern border - Lake Malawi, which serves as a natural boundary between Malawi and neighboring countries. Compared to Kenyan coffee, Malawian coffee offers considerable sweetness and aroma, while its acidity presents a different, more subdued style. If Kenyan acidity were compared to high notes, Malawian acidity would feel like mid to low tones. All coffee grown in Malawi is of the Arabica variety, processed using the washed method, and ranks as the country's ninth largest export product, accounting for only about 5% of total export value.

Unique Production Model

What's particularly special is that despite limited export quantities, Malawi's coffee production and distribution are managed by local people who have formed their own production and marketing companies responsible for processing and sales operations, rather than being government-controlled like Kenya's coffee collection and distribution system. Under this independent operational model, Malawian coffee quality has maintained consistently high standards, making it one of the most favored coffees among traders.

Mzuzu: Premium Coffee Growing Region

Mzuzu is located in the Misuku mountain coffee growing region, near the Songwe River which forms the border between Malawi and Tanzania. The main terrain consists of highland hills at elevations of 1,700 to 2,000 meters. The Misuku mountains are 320 kilometers from Mzuzu City, the major commercial and administrative hub of northern Malawi. The Misuku mountains feature abundant weathered parent rock rich in acidity, with mostly deep brown, dark red clay and sandy soils. The climate is ideal for Arabica bean growth, with the highest recorded temperature since 1983 being 21.9°C in November, and the lowest temperature of 9.9°C at Mwalingo (elevation 1,600 meters). Annual rainfall ranges from 1,500 to 2,000 millimeters.

The Mzuzu Coffee Planters Co-operative Union comprises six main cooperatives representing family coffee smallholders, with Khaga Cooperative Union being one of them, cultivating 300,000 coffee trees across 75 hectares. By joining the representative Mzuzu Coffee Planters Co-operative Union, Khaga's visibility and production techniques have significantly improved. Misuku coffee quality is among the finest in Malawi and often sells at premium prices. With bright acidity, rich tropical fruit aromas, and citrus and lemon fruit acids that add liveliness to the coffee, it's a coffee with strong tropical wild characteristics.

Khaga Cooperative Union Washed Geisha

This batch from the Mzuzu Coffee Planters Co-operative Union's Khaga Cooperative Union offers washed Geisha coffee. Through washed processing, it presents distinctive flavor characteristics: honey, guava caramel, brown sugar, dark plum, with a long-lasting aftertaste.

The Warm Heart of Africa

Malawi is called "The Warm Heart of Africa" due to its people's helpfulness and friendliness. Coffee grows in mountainous areas in the northern part of the country, from the Mzuzu Coffee Planters Co-operative Union, an organization that brings together five smaller cooperatives. One of the varieties grown here, Arabica-Geisha, comes from the Viphya North region's Rumphi District cooperative. Geisha, valued for its high quality, originates from Ethiopian forests (taking its name from the Kaffa region in southwestern Ethiopia). Gentle and well-balanced, this coffee features beautiful floral notes, honey aromas, bright citrus acidity, and a pleasant, refreshing fruity aftertaste.
