Malawi - A Representative African Coffee Origin

Malawi is a small landlocked country in southeastern Africa. Its coffee is primarily grown in the northern plateau regions, though production volumes are not large. Despite being landlocked, the map shows that to its northeast lies Lake Malawi, one of Africa's largest lakes, which forms a natural boundary between Malawi and its neighboring countries.

Compared to Kenyan coffee, Malawian coffee offers considerable sweetness and aroma, but presents a different style of acidity - lower and more grounded. If Kenyan acidity were compared to high notes, Malawian acidity would feel like mid to low tones. All coffee grown in Malawi is of the Arabica variety, processed using the washed method, and ranks as the country's ninth largest export product, accounting for only about 5% of total exports.

What makes Malawi particularly special is that despite limited export quantities, its coffee production and marketing are handled independently by local companies formed by growers themselves, who manage everything from production and processing to sales operations, rather than being government-controlled as in Kenya. This independent operational approach has allowed Malawian coffee to maintain consistently high quality, making it one of the most favored coffees among traders.

Origin Details

Origin: Malawi

Region: Mzuzu coffee is cultivated by nearly 4,000 farmers from 5 regions in northern Malawi. The growing altitude ranges between 1200-2900 meters.

Varieties: Catimor, Agaro, Geisha, Mundo Novo, Blue Mountain, and Cattura

Quality: Mzuzu coffee comes from 45 washed processing stations scattered across northern Malawi. Consequently, these regions produce coffee beans with different characteristics, but generally speaking, Mzuzu coffee can be described as exceptionally high-quality Arabica with aromatic flavors, medium body, and rich taste that incorporates many nuances. The base notes reveal black chocolate with discernible sweetness, while fruit notes display a bright orange flavor that emerges, followed by subtle grapefruit notes on the finish. If you enjoy rich fruity chocolate flavors with medium body, then this is the coffee for you.

Generally, properly roasted hard beans will have a tight white silver skin along the center line, which ensures perfect and lasting flavor. Mzuzu hard beans are the optimal choice for Vienna or Full City roasts. Over 25% of Mzuzu's green beans are roasted by Malawi's "Trust" to ensure balanced roasting at the appropriate time and guarantee perfect smooth flavor. These coffee beans are naturally cooled before being ground, and finally sold in tear-off aluminum foil packaging. The remaining green beans are exported directly without roasting.
