Geographic Overview of Colombia

Colombia is geographically located in the western part of South America, connecting with Venezuela, Brazil, Panama, Ecuador, and Peru. It is the only South American country that borders both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea to the east. Within its territory, the Andes Mountains extend from south to north, with western coastal plains and other mountainous regions. Most of these areas are primarily used for cultivating agricultural crops and coffee.

Colombia's Coffee Production

Colombia is a major producer and exporter of high-quality coffee, ranking among the top three globally. The main coffee production areas within Colombia are quite extensive, with the most renowned coffee-growing regions including Popayán, Cauca; Huila, San Agustin; Antioquia, Medellín; Nariño; Bucaramanga, Santander; Armenia, Quindío; Magdalena, Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta; and other coffee-growing regions.

Colombia's past volcanic activity has resulted in fertile soil for coffee cultivation. Colombia's three mountain ranges are part of the Andes, extending from north to south. The altitude range from 700 to 2,000 meters represents the optimal region for growing Arabica coffee in Colombia. The central mountain range is primarily dedicated to coffee cultivation, particularly notable areas include Medellín, as well as Manizales in the central region and Armenia in the western region. Additionally, Libano in the central producing region is an excellent source of Supremo coffee.

Other popular varieties in the world coffee market include Popayán, San Agustin, and Nariño coffee from the border region adjacent to Ecuador. Nariño coffee is revered with the same respect as the Vatican's sacred chalice, characterized by its mild and soft texture with abundant aroma, making it an impressive high-quality coffee. Additionally, there are two excellent coffee varieties with lower acidity: Bogotá and Bucaramanga from the eastern producing region. Medellin Coffee Region

The Medellin producing region is located in Colombia's northern mountain range, at an altitude of 1,500 feet. Fertile soil and abundant rainfall have created the high-concentration flavor profile of beans from the Medellin region. All beans are hand-harvested and wet-processed, giving Medellin beans their unique tea-like quality and caramel aroma.

Antioquia Department, located in north-central Colombia, has 126,000 hectares dedicated to coffee cultivation, producing 2,000,000 bags (60kg/bag) of coffee beans, accounting for 18% of Colombia's total production. Its production is second only to Huila Department. Most areas within this department consist of high mountain terrain belonging to the Andes, yet are influenced by the warm Caribbean sea breezes. The provincial capital, Medellín, is Colombia's second-largest city and simultaneously an important coffee-producing region.

Specialty Coffee Production

This producing region features many specialty coffee beans from smallholder micro-batch production, showcasing distinct regional flavor characteristics. In recent years, with the international market's emphasis on coffee quality and demands for specialty coffee, production has shifted to micro-regional production organizations that provide micro-batches from small coffee farmers (Micro-regional selections). Dozens of small farmers contribute their individual harvests to create consolidated micro-batches for sale, resulting in better quality control.

This approach provides more opportunities to select many high-quality specific micro-regional smallholder coffees through batch-by-batch cupping. The coffee flavor is more vibrant, with fresh ripe fruit and caramel notes in the aroma, and a more harmonious balance between acidity and sweetness.

Coffee from the Medellin region is of the highest quality and commands premium prices. Its characteristics include: full, plump beans, rich nutritional content, intense aroma, and moderate acidity.
