Introduction of Coffee to Colombia
In 1808, coffee was first introduced to Colombia by a priest who brought it from the French Antilles via Venezuela. Today, the country is the second-largest producer after Brazil, with an annual production of 13 million bags of 60 kg each, while Brazil's production reaches 22 million bags. The importance of coffee in Colombia is evident from the fact that all vehicles entering the country must be sprayed and disinfected to prevent unintentionally bringing diseases that could harm coffee trees.
Quality and Production
Colombian coffee is one of the few unblended coffees sold worldwide under a country name. In terms of quality, it has received praise that other coffees cannot match. The country is the world's largest exporter of Arabica coffee beans, with very little Robusta coffee cultivation. It is also the world's largest exporter of washed beans. Compared to other producing countries, Colombia focuses more on product development and production promotion. This, combined with its superior geographical and climatic conditions, makes Colombian coffee high-quality, flavorful, and renowned globally.
Growing Regions and Characteristics
The main growing regions are in the Andes Mountains, where coffee is cultivated on slopes at around 1,300 meters above sea level. Temperatures range from 7-18 degrees Celsius, making it ideal for coffee growth. Colombian coffee belongs to the Arabica species and is processed using the washed method, giving it a unique acidity. Due to its medium concentration, it is often used in premium coffee blends.
Famous growing regions include "Medellín," "Manizales," "Bogotá," and "Armenia," where all cultivated coffee beans are of the Arabica species. These beans have quite intense flavors, with stable quality and prices. The roasted coffee beans appear larger and more attractive. Production ranges from lower-grade to premium-grade beans, with some being exceptionally rare, featuring flavors so mellow that coffee lovers find them irresistible.
Flavor Profile
Flavor characteristics: The coffee has rich and intense acidity, bitterness, and sweetness, with a color reminiscent of fine wine.
