Honduras: The Land of Deep Valleys and Fine Coffee
Honduras, meaning "deep valley" in Spanish, boasts inland mountains and deep valleys with fertile soil and mild climate. These wonderful natural conditions nurtured the ancient Mayan civilization and now cultivate round coffee fruits!
With a captivating base of floral aromas and delicate fruit acidity, it reveals subtle floral and fruity sweetness. The overall flavor is refreshingly elegant, gentle, and smooth, with a sweet aftertaste!
The Rise of Honduran Coffee
Previously, Honduras had relatively low recognition in the consumer market due to insufficient support in green bean processing and transportation. In recent years, Honduras has actively transformed its coffee industry and expanded marketing, gradually raising its international profile. Honduras harvests three million bags of coffee annually, providing the world with perfect coffee and unique coffee aromas. With abundant quantity and excellent quality, it has now become the largest coffee exporter in Central America and one of the top ten coffee-exporting countries worldwide.
Coffee Growing Regions
Honduran coffee is divided into six major growing regions, spread across the western and southern areas: Copan, Opalaca, Montecillos, Comayagua, Agalta Tropical, and El Paraiso. The average growing altitude is above 1,100 meters.
Geographic Advantages
Honduras is located in northern Central America, bordered by the Caribbean Sea to the north, the Gulf of Fonseca (Pacific Ocean) to the south, Nicaragua and El Salvador to the east and south, and Guatemala to the west. The terrain consists mainly of mountains and plateaus. It has a tropical climate with mild temperatures and abundant rainfall, making it an ideal place for coffee cultivation.
Coffee Quality and Grades
Honduras produces two excellent quality coffees highly praised by coffee enthusiasts. One is "Highland Coffee" grown at altitudes of 1,000-1,500 meters, and the other is "Select Highland Coffee" grown at 1,500-2,000 meters, representing Honduras's highest grade. Most Honduran coffee is exported to the United States and Germany.
Honduran coffee boasts first-class quality and is also the most competitively priced among Central American countries. It is mainly exported to the United States, Germany, and Japan. The coffee varieties are 100% Arabica, with 69% classified as HG grade, 12% as SHG, and 19% as CS. Main varieties include Typica, Bourbon, Caturra, Villa Sarchi, and Lempira.
Comayagua Region
The Comayagua region is located between the Comayagua and Francisco Morazán areas, featuring predominantly lemon flavors with sweet and chocolate notes, grown at altitudes of 1,000-1,500 meters.
