Nicaragua Coffee Growing Regions
Nicaragua is primarily divided into four major growing regions: the Segovias region, the Matagalpa/Jinotega region, the Boaco region, and the Pacific Coast region. The Segovias region has the highest growing altitude at approximately 1,500-2,000 meters, producing the highest grade SHG (Strictly High Grown) coffee.
Nicaragua also has some smaller growing areas, including Madriz, Managua, Boaca, and Carazo. While not widely known, these regions actually produce some excellent coffee.
Madriz Region Characteristics
Madriz: High acidity, small fruit, moderate sweetness, and rich tulip aroma. It also contains various fruit juice flavors including grapefruit, peach, apple, vanilla, honey, and cherry.
Quality and Origin
The widespread volcanic ash and shade-grown cultivation methods produce high-quality Nicaraguan coffee with mild, smooth flavors and slight acidity. Nicaraguan coffee beans are among the largest of all coffee varieties. MADRIZ is located in the mountainous region of northern Nicaragua, bordering Nueva Segovia, Jinotega, and Esteli. This area is peaceful and elegant, featuring the famous Somoto Canyon. The local population consists mainly of various indigenous tribes and people of mixed Spanish and indigenous heritage from the colonial period (predominantly Chorotegas).

The local residents are primarily indigenous peoples from various tribes and those of mixed Spanish-indigenous heritage from the colonial period (mainly Chorotegas). The area produces coffee, develops arts and crafts processing trade, and boasts traditional delicious cuisine. Madriz is characterized by a cool climate, and its small towns appear simple yet feature beautiful house roofs and white buildings with special tiles. The region also has many coffee plantations, with mountains covered in lush pine and oak forests.
Madriz High Mountain Coffee
Madriz high mountain coffee is an organic coffee variety with extremely hard shells. Grown in completely natural environments, it employs complex cultivation methods to maintain the delicate aroma and flavor of the coffee. Produced between Matagalpa and Jinotega in northern Nicaragua, these high-quality mountain beans are grown at altitudes with average annual rainfall of 1500-1700mm and temperatures between 20-29°C. All coffee is manually selected, with labor and time costs exceeding those of ordinary beans by many times.
