Guatemala Coffee Overview

Guatemala is located in the Central American isthmus, where many volcanic high mountains and plateaus produce high-quality Central American high-altitude extremely hard coffee beans, making it the 9th largest coffee bean producing country in the world. Guatemala's main coffee producing regions include seven major areas: Antigua, Huehuetenango, Atitlan, Coban, Fraijanes, San Marcos, and Acatenango.

Acatenango

The Acatenango region produces some of Guatemala's highest altitude coffee beans. Because the nearby Fuego and Pacaya volcanoes continue to erupt, the rough, sandy soil becomes rich in minerals. The Acatenango region has a special microclimate. During the day, moist warm air is brought from the coast under the influence of the Pacific Ocean; at dawn and night, it receives dry cold air from the Guatemalan highlands. The large temperature difference between day and night makes the coffee from this region sweeter.

ACATENANGO Region Details

Acatenango is a very unique coffee producing region in Guatemala. It is the smallest of Guatemala's eight coffee producing regions, situated on the slopes of the Acatenango volcano at an average altitude of 1,600 meters. Its soil is rich in volcanic mixtures, which comes from frequent new volcanic ash eruptions from the nearby Fuego volcano.

The microclimate characteristic of this region is distinct seasons. In spring, farmers can sun-dry their coffee; during summer, abundant rainfall nourishes the coffee trees while maintaining humidity; and in winter, warm, humid sea breezes from the Pacific Ocean protect the coffee from the cold.

The coffee production area of the Acatenango region surrounds the Acatenango Valley, named after the volcano. In the past, many producers sold their coffee to "coyotes," who would export the fruit to the Antigua region for processing. This was because Antigua coffee enjoyed a better reputation and could be sold at higher prices. This practice is now less common, as the Acatenango specialty region has begun producing excellent coffee beans with increasingly widespread recognition, making the region's coffee beans not only profitable but also traceable.

Acatenango Valley

The Acatenango Valley is an emerging coffee growing region in Guatemala. At an altitude of 2,000 meters, lush forests shade the coffee trees planted by small farmers, while also blocking the hot air from the Pacific Ocean and transforming it into humid air currents. The coffee has fruity acidity, rich aromatic flavor, leaving an endless aftertaste.
