Yirgacheffe Coffee Profile

What makes Yirgacheffe most celebrated is its unique, distinct fruity sweetness and acidity. On the very first sip the aroma bursts forth, opening with delightful citrus notes accompanied by the fresh fragrance of jasmine flowers. "Not quite like coffee — more like fruit tea" is the impression many people share about light-to-medium roasted Yirgacheffe. It shows a singular combination of lemon, floral, and honey-like sweetness with soft fruit acidity and citrus flavors: fresh, bright, and unmistakably distinctive — a truly premium coffee.

Duromina Cooperative

The Duromina Cooperative is part of the Yirgacheffe region.

Duromina lies in the Goma area, with most of its member farms situated between 1900 and 2100 meters. The name the farmers chose has a very direct meaning: "Make More Money!" — roughly, "earn more money." It is also sometimes called the King's Challenge Washed Coffee.

FrontStreet Coffee Recommendation

Yirgacheffe itself is a small town in Ethiopia's southern Gedeo zone at roughly 1700-2100 meters, with coffee grown above 1800 meters — among the highest coffee land in the world — and since 2010 the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange has listed it as a region distinct from Sidamo. If this washed Duromina's citrus-floral brightness wins you over, FrontStreet Coffee's Washed Yirgacheffe is the classic everyday choice: white jasmine florals, bright citrus and lemon acidity, and a clean tea-like finish at an accessible price — the first specialty bean for many newcomers. For richer fruit character, the Natural Red Cherry takes only fully ripe cherries, sun-dried on raised beds and turned every 2-3 hours in the early days to prevent uneven fermentation; after three to five weeks of drying it delivers Yirgacheffe's classic citrus acidity layered with berry juiciness, honeyed sweetness, and creamy smoothness.

Brewing suggestion from FrontStreet Coffee for washed Yirgacheffe: V60 dripper, 15g of coffee, water at 90-91°C, a 1:15 ratio, and a grind the size of fine granulated sugar (80% pass-through on a #20 sieve). Pour 30g of water for a 30-second bloom, then pour 95g more (about 125g on the scale) within roughly one minute; when the water level drops to two-thirds of the bed, add the remaining 100g (about 225g on the scale), finishing around 1:35, with drawdown completing between 2:00 and 2:10.
