The Guji Region of Ethiopia

The Guji region in southern Ethiopia borders the Sidamo and Gedeo zones. It features diverse topography with towering mountains, highlands, plateaus, valleys, and plains. The region's geology consists of nutrient-rich, well-drained volcanic soil with a depth of nearly two meters, with surface soil appearing dark brown or brown. The area's greatest advantage lies in its soil fertility, which is maintained through natural organic matter cycles, using fallen leaves and decaying matter from surrounding forests and plant residues as natural fertilizers.

Ethiopia's Eight Major Coffee Regions

Ethiopia's coffee primarily comes from eight major regions: Ekempti, Limu, Illubabor, Djimma, Harrar, Teppi/Bebeka, Sidamo, and Yirgacheffe.

Sidamo and Shakisso Regions

Ethiopian coffee is highly regarded in Taiwan, with particular interest and love for the three famous regions of Harrar, Sidamo, and Yirgacheffe. The Sidamo region is located in southern Ethiopia. Agriculture dominates the local industry, with coffee growing areas situated around the Great Rift Valley. Hawassa is the largest town in Sidamo province and serves as an important coffee export distribution center. Sidamo coffee flavors are extremely diverse due to varying soil compositions, regional microclimates, and countless native coffee varieties, creating distinct differences and characteristics in coffee produced by each town and area.

Shakisso, located in the Guji area of the Oromia region's south, borders Sidamo and Gedeo. This area has many mines that were previously used for gold mining, so there are numerous pits in the coffee-growing areas, making walking between coffee plantations dangerous. Shakisso is a unique production area within Guji/Sidamo. Even within Sidamo, it's a remote region far from most coffee-producing areas, and gold mining is another famous local product. Factors such as miners, land, and ethnic tensions also made the region unstable in 2006. Therefore, the biggest problem this area faces now is the need for manpower to maintain plantations and harvest coffee. Local small farmers began growing organic coffee here in 2001, working closely with medium-sized coffee producers who are knowledgeable about growing forest coffee in highland areas.

Sasaba Processing Station

Sasaba is a relatively new supply processing station known for its clean and sweet flavors combined with intense tropical fruit fermentation aromatics. Small farmers who sell their coffee cherries to the Sasaba processing station typically own only 10-15 coffee trees. Besides coffee, they also grow self-sufficient crops like corn, pineapple, and peas—this is typical Ethiopian small-farm economics!
