The Guji Region of Ethiopia
The Guji production area in southern Ethiopia borders the Sidamo and Gedeo regions. The area features diverse topography with towering mountains, highlands, plateaus, valleys, and plains. The region's geology consists of nutrient-rich, well-drained volcanic soil with depths reaching nearly two meters, with surface soil appearing dark brown or brown. The area's greatest advantage lies in its soil fertility, which is maintained through the natural recycling of organic matter, using fallen leaves and decayed materials from surrounding forests and residual plant roots as natural fertilizers.
Ethiopia's Eight Major Coffee Growing Regions
Ethiopia's coffee primarily comes from eight major growing regions: Ekempti, Limu, Illubabor, Djimma, Harrar, Teppi/Bebeka, Sidamo, and Yirgacheffe.
Ethiopian coffee is highly regarded in Taiwan, with particular interest and love among Taiwanese people for the three more famous growing regions: Harrar, Sidamo, and Yirgacheffe.
The Sidamo Region
The Sidamo production area is located in southern Ethiopia. Agriculture dominates the local economy, with coffee growing areas situated around the Great Rift Valley. The largest town in Sidamo province is Hawassa, an important coffee export and distribution center. Sidamo's coffee flavors are extremely diverse due to different soil compositions, regional microclimates, and countless native coffee varieties, resulting in distinct differences and characteristics in coffee produced by each town and region.
Shakisso: A Unique Growing Area
Shakisso, located in Guji, Oromia region in the south, borders Sidamo and Gedeo. This area has many mining pits that were originally used for gold mining, so the coffee growing area has numerous holes, making it dangerous to walk between coffee planting areas. Shakisso is a unique growing area within Guji/Sidamo, even within Sidamo it's a remote region far from most coffee production areas, with gold mining being another famous local product. Factors such as miners, land, and ethnicity also made the region unstable in 2006. Therefore, the biggest problem this area faces now is the need for manpower to maintain the growing areas and harvest coffee. Local small farmers here began growing organic coffee in 2001 and work closely with medium-sized coffee producers because they know how to grow forest coffee in highland areas.
Mormora Farm (Devil's Farm) on the Guji Plateau
Mormora Farm (Devil's Farm) on the Guji Plateau was established in 2012 by nearby families and local small farmers. Located at an altitude between 2000-2300 meters, they practice organic agriculture on the Guji Plateau. They add new planting areas each year, and all varieties come from nearby local traditional varieties they call "mother trees." The Guji highlands currently only produce natural process coffee, with plans to build a washed processing station in the future.
