Orange River: Premium Coffee from Colombia's Huila Region

Huila Province, located in western Colombia, is an important producing region for the country's specialty coffee, among which the town of San Augustin, traversed by the Los Naranjos River, is particularly valued. In Spanish, Naranjos means orange, so the combined production batch of small farmers in this region is named Orange River.

The hillsides on both banks of the river are composed of local small coffee farmers, forming a beautiful community dotted with lavender, while also serving as a natural habitat for butterflies and hummingbirds. To the west, it borders the Cueva de los Quacharo Biological Reserve, which spans 500 square miles. This region is located in a canyon where the western coastal mountain range and eastern mountain range of the Colombian Andes meet. Ancient inhabitants lived here and left numerous giant stone sculptures. Due to its special geographical location, local people believe that the great natural forces of the forest will protect the land from harsh weather and grant them a peaceful and tranquil home.

In 2001, local small coffee farmers gathered to improve their production management techniques in order to enter the specialty coffee market. They established an organization called La Asociacion Los Naranjos de San Augustin. It has now grown to 50 members, with a total coffee cultivation area of 150 hectares, and an average small farm area of 2.8 hectares. During the main harvest season, each hectare produces approximately 1500 to 2000 kilograms, while the secondary harvest season (Fly Crop) also yields about half of that production. During the secondary harvest season, because the independent output of each small farmer in Los Naranjos is less than the quantity required for a micro-batch, they combine the outputs of small farmers with similar cup profiles to mix into one batch for sale.

Los Naranjos' unique terroir conditions and dedication to quality improvement, in addition to stable and high-quality production, also stood out among 100 coffee samples in the 2009 SCAA (Specialty Coffee Association of America) annual competition, earning recognition as the Coffee of the Year (SCAA COTY Winner).
