Cauca Region: Origin and Geography

The Cauca production region in Colombia derives its name from the Cauca River. Located in southwestern Colombia, it stands alongside Narino Department and Huila Department as one of Colombia's important premium coffee production areas. Cauca is a Colombian coffee origin certified region with an average altitude of 1758m, reaching up to 2100m at its highest points. The region's topography, precipitation, temperature, and volcanic soil create ideal conditions for coffee cultivation. 80% of Cauca consists of mountainous terrain, with parallel mountain ranges in the eastern and central areas forming part of the Andes Mountains. The central mountain range includes two main volcanoes, Sotara and Petacas, while the boundary features the perpetually snow-capped Huila Mountain. Benefiting from volcanic ash, the region's soil provides rich nutrients for coffee growth.

Cultivation and Processing

Following Colombia's excellent traditions, Cauca coffee is hand-picked and wet-processed. Additionally, after receiving the coffee cherries, a unified quality control system is implemented. This professional processing approach ensures the quality of the coffee from the plantation to the processing environment. The varieties grown are predominantly Caturra, with additional ancient varieties including Typica and Bourbon.

Climate and Quality Characteristics

The most significant climatic difference between Cauca and other production regions is likely the relatively large temperature variation. The daily average temperature is 11°C, while the daytime average reaches 18°C. This day-night temperature difference is a crucial factor in producing premium coffee. The lower nighttime temperatures and relatively higher altitude slow down the coffee growth rhythm, allowing coffee seeds and beans to more fully absorb nutrients from the coffee fruit. This also creates better acidity and the particularly noteworthy sweetness that Cauca coffee is renowned for.

Mango Estate Flavor Profile

The beans from Mango Estate in the Cauca region feature chocolate flavors, pear-like sweetness, and a hint of mushroom taste. After dark roasting, they exhibit high sweetness and aftertaste, with prominent dark chocolate flavors, balanced with low acidity and smoothness.
