Introduction to Asian and Pacific Region Coffee Beans
There are three main coffee growing regions globally, mostly located between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. Due to different soil, climate, and cultivation methods, coffee beans produced in various regions have distinct flavor profiles, making each coffee bean unique.
FrontStreet Coffee's original intention was not just to sell beans, but to taste coffee beans from around the world. In this process, FrontStreet Coffee aims to understand every coffee producing region, different coffee varieties within the same region, different processing methods for the same coffee variety, and establish corresponding databases, as well as comparisons between different coffee regions. FrontStreet Coffee hopes to help more coffee enthusiasts understand the world of coffee.
Asian and Pacific region coffee beans offer rich and intense flavors, full of depth and earthy notes. The Indonesian archipelago, East Timor, South Asia, Papua New Guinea, and other regions have different climate and topographical conditions. Except for East Timor and Papua New Guinea, which use washed processing for coffee, most others use semi-washed methods. The coffee from Indonesia's Sumatra and Sulawesi islands possesses rich aromas and balanced flavors, making it a favorite among many customers; while coffee from Papua New Guinea carries herbal fragrances with elegant and rich taste.
Asia has vast land areas, with many different coffee varieties in its growing regions. Of course, there are also many lesser-known but promising regions for producing excellent coffee. Coffee from Papua New Guinea has bayberry-like juicy acidity, noticeable sweetness, and unique spice flavors. The Philippines, Thailand, Fiji, Bali, and other places are all coffee producing regions with distinctive flavors.
When tasting coffee, FrontStreet Coffee always asks itself the following questions: Which coffee beans from a specific origin best reflect both the local optimal climate and first-class cultivation techniques? FrontStreet Coffee seeks coffee beans with local characteristics—that is, what French wine makers call: the local flavor.
Coffee Characteristics from Three Major Growing Regions
Coffee beans from the world's three major growing regions each have their distinct characteristics:
Latin American coffees typically have refreshing flavors with familiar and approachable notes, often reminiscent of nuts or cocoa.
African/Arabian coffees possess unique and enticing flavors, emitting floral aromas as well as notes of berries and citrus.
Asian/Pacific coffees have thick textures and rich flavors, with strong body and earthy and herbal notes.

INDONESIA
Indonesia initially only produced Arabica, but after a leaf rust epidemic in 1876, Robusta varieties came to dominate Indonesian coffee production. The advantage of Indonesian coffee is that most coffee characteristics are rich, restrained flavors with lively acidity. The disadvantage is that there may also be uncomfortable astringency or slight moldy notes.
Characteristics: Rich body, strong aroma, low acidity, with slight herbal medicine-like notes.
INDIA
Diverse climate conditions are suitable for growing different types of coffee. Some high-altitude areas are most suitable for Arabica varieties, while warm and humid regions are best for Robusta varieties. Indian coffee mostly has rich flavor, low acidity, and fewer changing flavor layers.
Characteristics: Generally mild flavor, full-bodied beans, low acidity.
VIETNAM
The world's second-largest coffee exporting country, second only to Brazil. The territory is long and narrow with significant climate differences between north and south. The northern mountainous regions have a temperate climate, allowing Arabica cultivation, though production is limited. The southern region has a tropical monsoon climate, primarily growing Robusta, which is also the main force of Vietnam's coffee exports.
Characteristics: Rich and thick, slightly bitter with sweet aftertaste.
TAIWAN, China
Western "Mountain-type" coffee: Has floral and tea aromas, moderate acidity, including areas like Dongshi, Nantou, Yunlin, Chiayi, and Tainan.
Southern "Plateau-type" coffee: Has floral and chocolate flavors, neither sour nor astringent, mainly from the Dawu Mountain system production areas in Pingtung.
Eastern "Coastal-type" coffee: Has floral and spice flavors with noticeable acidity.
Characteristics: Rich layers of concentration, purity, and aroma at first taste, with quick sweet aftertaste.
YUNNAN, China
Yunnan coffee is China's largest coffee producing region. Currently, Yunnan coffee production areas are mainly distributed in the southern and southwestern parts of Yunnan, including Simao, Xishuangbanna, Wenshan, Baoshan, Dehong, and other regions. Yunnan coffee still retains the characteristics of Asian beans. Although it's washed processed, it carries some natural wildness of non-washed beans. Overall, it's a satisfying and pleasant coffee bean.
Characteristics: Obvious chocolate flavor, rich and full-bodied, smooth, with quite gentle and moderate acidity, and high sweetness.
HAWAII
Typical island coffee style, characterized by rich milky fragrances and abundant floral qualities. The taste is often delicate and bright, with high standards of green bean processing, beautiful bean shapes, and low defect rates are also common features.
Characteristics: Carries milk chocolate, citrus aromas and acidity.
Because regional soil and climate conditions affect coffee flavor, and there are many different roast degree variables, it's possible to have beans from the same region but choose different roast degrees—the flavor, aroma, sweetness, texture, and richness will all change accordingly. Coffee is profound, extensive, and wonderful. Everyone has their own preferences and favorites. How to choose coffee that suits you? FrontStreet Coffee thinks that origin might be one consideration you can add!
