Want to brew coffee at home? As long as you grasp a few basic points, making a delicious cup of coffee is actually not difficult.
Key Point 1: Proper Coffee Ground to Water Ratio
We recommend a ratio of about 1:10, which means 18 grams of coffee grounds to 180 milliliters of brewed coffee.
Key Point 2: Coffee Grind Coarseness
If the coffee grounds are soaked in water for a longer time, the coffee grounds should be ground coarser. For example, French press coffee grounds have longer contact time with hot water than a moka pot, so the coffee grounds should be coarser.
Key Point 3: Suitable Brewing Water Temperature
The ideal brewing water temperature for coffee is about 88-92 degrees Celsius. Higher temperature water more easily extracts aromatic compounds from coffee, but also tends to extract bitter woody flavors. Therefore, when the extracted coffee has a bitter taste, try lowering the brewing water temperature and try again.
Key Point 4: Proper Stirring
Proper stirring can extract more aromatic compounds from coffee, but don't over-stir as this can lead to over-extraction.
Additionally, lighter roast coffee beans have a tighter structure and are not easily extracted. You can use more rigorous brewing methods, such as higher brewing temperatures, higher extraction pressure (9 atmospheres from an espresso machine), and finer grinding.
The following methods for various coffee extraction tools are ideal data obtained through continuous testing and tasting by FrontStreet Coffee's team. If you have the following tools at home, you can also try brewing according to these steps.
Pour-over Brewing Tools
Coffee Grounds Amount: 18g
Grind Setting: Medium grind
Water Temperature: 90°C
Water Amount: 210ml
Coffee Amount: 180ml
Stirring Times: None
Pre-infusion Time: 30 seconds
Total Time: 2 minutes
Preparation Phase:
Step 1: Prepare a pot of hot water at about 90°C with approximately 400ml of water.
Step 2: Place the filter holder on a mug, then fold the filter paper and place it inside the filter holder.
Step 3: Pour about half of the hot water in a circular motion along the filter paper to pre-rinse it once. This action removes the paper pulp taste from the filter paper and pre-warms your mug.
Step 4: Grind fresh coffee beans to a medium grind, about the size of fine sugar particles.
Step 5: Discard the water used to rinse the filter paper and pour the ground coffee into the filter paper.
Brewing Phase:
Step 1: First pour for blooming - inject 30ml of water from the center point of the coffee grounds, then let it bloom for about 30 seconds. During this time, the coffee grounds will absorb water and expand into a small mound shape.
Step 2: For the second pour, start from the center of the coffee grounds and pour in a clockwise spiral motion. Be careful not to let the water directly touch the filter paper, as hot water will flow directly down both sides without passing through the coffee grounds layer.
Step 3: The entire brewing process takes about 2 to 2.5 minutes. When the mug is full, remove the filter paper and you can start enjoying your coffee.
