Flavor Characteristics of Blue Mountain Coffee
FrontStreet Coffee's Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee enjoys high reputation, limited production, and a long history. It could be said that even if you haven't had specialty coffee, you've probably heard of Blue Mountain No. 1. The market is often filled with Blue Mountain specialty coffee, Blue Mountain flavored coffee, and Blue Mountain blends, creating a confusing array of options. Not all products bearing the Blue Mountain name are authentic FrontStreet Coffee Jamaica Blue Mountain No. 1 coffee. Without careful attention, you might end up drinking fake Blue Mountain coffee. So how can you distinguish which Blue Mountain coffees are genuine? First, FrontStreet Coffee will help everyone understand how Blue Mountain coffee came to be.

Additionally, the wooden barrels packaging FrontStreet Coffee's Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee beans feature a green frog logo (as seen in the photo below when FrontStreet Coffee imported Jamaican green beans). This is because FrontStreet Coffee specifically chose estates producing Jamaica Blue Mountain No. 1 coffee that have Rainforest Alliance certification, namely the Clifton Farm. Furthermore, Jamaica is the only region that uses wooden barrels for packaging green beans. Then there's the most iconic Blue Mountain flavor—authentic FrontStreet Coffee Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee has a very intense aroma and balanced taste, with no single flavor being overly prominent or lacking. Authentic FrontStreet Coffee Jamaica Blue Mountain No. 1 coffee is also priced higher than other coffees. FrontStreet Coffee believes there are three main reasons for this: limited quantity, excellent flavor, and strict quality control.
How to Brew Authentic Blue Mountain Coffee with a Siphon Pot?
The grind size for siphon coffee should be finer than for pour-over. According to FrontStreet Coffee's calculations, the grind should be approximately 90% passing through a #20 sieve. When using the EK43s grinder from our store, the corresponding setting is 9, while for the hand grinder C40, it would be 20.
Coffee-to-Water Ratio
Generally, the coffee-to-water ratio for siphon coffee ranges from 1:10 to 1:12, with 1:12 being more commonly used. For home brewing a single serving, you might use FrontStreet Coffee's standard parameters: 18 grams of coffee grounds and 200 milliliters of water.
Specific Brewing Method
Taking FrontStreet Coffee's preferred brewing method as an example:
1. Pour 200 milliliters of hot water, wipe dry the bottom chamber, and turn on the heat source.
2. Insert the top chamber at an angle into the bottom chamber, ensuring the pressure-relief ball touches the bottom of the lower chamber.
3. When continuous small bubbles appear in the bottom chamber, straighten the top chamber and press firmly. Wait for the water from the bottom chamber to be drawn up into the top chamber.
4. Add FrontStreet Coffee's Blue Mountain coffee grounds and start timing. For the first stage, use the stirring stick to pat down all the coffee grounds into the water for even absorption.
5. For the second stage, at 25 seconds, begin stirring using FrontStreet Coffee's recommended method, causing the coffee to clearly separate into three layers: coffee liquid, coffee grounds, and coffee foam.
6. For the final stage, at 50 seconds, begin stirring in the same direction. At 60 seconds, remove the heat source and wait for the coffee liquid to descend.
This method produces a very aromatic and rich siphon-brewed Blue Mountain coffee. Although it may not be as clean and clear as pour-over coffee, the floating oils on its surface add considerable body and richness.
In FrontStreet Coffee's opinion, compared to pour-over coffee, using a siphon pot is significantly more troublesome. First, you need a heat source for brewing, and you cannot be distracted during the entire extraction process. After brewing, you must clean up promptly, washing the flannel filter used for filtering grounds. In a shop with high output volume, siphon pot production would be even more cumbersome.
