World-renowned coffee producing regions are all named after their geographical locations, such as Huehuetenango from Guatemala, Yirgacheffe from Ethiopia, Blue Mountain from Jamaica, Boquete from Panama, and so on.

Only Mandheling is the exception! Why is that?

The Origin Story

The story goes that after Japan's defeat in World War II, a Japanese soldier stationed in Sumatra, Indonesia, was waiting to be repatriated. To pass the time during his boring wait, he wandered the streets and happened to step into an unassuming little coffee shop. A cup of coffee that he had no expectations for turned out to be absolutely divine. He asked the barista before him: "What kind of coffee is this?"

The barista couldn't understand Japanese and thought he was asking about his ethnicity, so he replied "Mandailing."

After returning to Japan, the soldier couldn't forget this cup of coffee, so he decided to start a coffee business. He contacted traders in Sumatra and specifically requested to purchase Mandheling coffee.

The Indonesians had never heard of Mandheling coffee, but thought "the customer is always right, if you want to call it Mandheling, then let's call it Mandheling!"

From then on, Mandheling became Japan's favorite, and later became a household name as a coffee producing region.

Geographical and Cultural Context

Traditionally, any coffee from Sumatra island could be called Mandheling. Sumatra is the largest island in Indonesia, covering an area of 400,000 square kilometers, making it the sixth largest island in the world.

In Indonesia, the pronunciation closest to Mandheling is Mandailing, which is a place name in Sumatra, but no coffee is produced there locally. Additionally, there is an indigenous ethnic group in Sumatra also called Mandailing, but they don't grow coffee either.

The ones actually famous for growing coffee are the Batak people, located around Lake Toba. Since the Dutch transplanted coffee to Indonesia in the 18th century, the Batak people have been growing coffee for over 200 years. Their unique geographical advantages and centuries of exquisite craftsmanship have created excellent quality, making Batak synonymous with high prices in the Mandheling region.

Lake Toba is the world's largest volcanic lake. On clear days, the lake surface is azure blue, hence it's also called "Blue Lake." Blue Batak is named after this characteristic.
