Hario V60 01 vs 02: The Difference in Size - How Much Coffee Should You Use for V60-01 and V60-02?

Hand-pour coffee enthusiasts all have an essential Hario V60 dripper, and many friends have asked FrontStreet Coffee about the differences between the 01 and 02 size drippers. In this article, FrontStreet Coffee will discuss the V60 dripper, which is "not picky about people or beans."
The Origin of the V60 Dripper Name
The name V60 comes from the dripper's 60-degree conical angle. Materials have successively included ceramic, glass, resin, and metal. The latest Hario V60 dripper material is brass, specially designed for high thermal conductivity to achieve better extraction through improved heat retention.

V60 Dripper Features
The 60-degree conical design is the source of the "60" in V60's name. This 60-degree design allows water to flow toward the center, extending contact time between water and coffee, resulting in more balanced coffee extraction.
The large-diameter filter hole allows control of coffee flavor by changing different pouring heights and intensities, controlling water flow rate.

The most impressive feature of the Hario V60 dripper is undoubtedly its spiral-shaped rib design. The dripper uses alternating long and short spiral rib designs, allowing air to escape upward from all sides to maximize coffee powder expansion, better release carbon dioxide from beans during the blooming process, and ensure stable subsequent coffee extraction.
Meanwhile, the spiral convex rib design also causes compression from the falling water flow, extending the extraction path and increasing contact time between coffee grounds and water flow, avoiding under-extraction caused by the large hole (too fast filtration speed). It creates compression on coffee grounds through the gravity of falling water flow, forming a richer layered complexity.

What's the Difference Between V60 01 and 02 Drippers?
Actually, it's just the size difference of the dripper. The 01 size dripper brews coffee for 1-2 people, but can actually brew 3-4 portions; the 02 size dripper brews coffee for 3-4 people, but can actually brew 5-6 portions. The recommended coffee dose per brew for the 01 dripper should not exceed 20g, while the 02 dripper should not exceed 40g per brew. Why? Because when your coffee dose is too high, the coffee grounds accumulate in the filter paper, slowing water flow rate and extending coffee extraction time, making coffee flavor prone to bitterness.

Therefore, when using the 02 dripper, since the coffee dose increases, the thickness of the coffee layer will also increase. After the coffee layer becomes thicker, the flow rate naturally slows down. If you use the 02 dripper with the same coffee grind size as the 01 dripper, over-extraction can easily occur. Therefore, FrontStreet Coffee suggests that when using the 02 dripper, you can appropriately adjust the coffee grind to be slightly coarser.
What Roast Level Coffee Beans are Suitable for V60 Dripper Brewing?
FrontStreet Coffee believes that as an essential dripper for beginners and well-known to everyone, the V60 can handle coffee beans of all roast levels. As FrontStreet Coffee just mentioned, the V60's rib design makes coffee more layered in complexity. If we had to say what roast level it's most suitable for brewing, it would probably be light roast coffee beans. For example, FrontStreet Coffee's Ethiopia Natural Red Cherry coffee beans—using V60 for brewing is very suitable to clearly express the berry fruit acidity, noticeable fermentation notes, and sweetness in layers. Next, FrontStreet Coffee will use natural Red Cherry coffee beans from the Yirgacheffe region for brewing demonstrations using both 01 and 02 size drippers.

How to Use V60 01 Dripper for Brewing?
When FrontStreet Coffee uses the V60 01 dripper for brewing, they choose resin material, which insulates against heat loss. They select 15g coffee dose, 1:15 powder-to-water ratio, with total water injection of 225g, yielding approximately 190g coffee liquid after filtration. Grind size: 80% pass-through through 0.85mm mesh screen. Water temperature: 90-91°C.

The brewing method uses three-stage pouring. The first stage injects 30g of water for blooming (twice the coffee weight), with a 30-second bloom time, ensuring all coffee grounds are moistened during blooming. The second stage injects water to 125g, pouring evenly and gently. After injection, wait 10 seconds for coffee liquid to filter. The final stage injects the remaining water to reach the total 225g. Wait for complete coffee liquid filtration before enjoying. Total extraction time is approximately 2 minutes.

How to Use V60 02 Dripper for Brewing?
When FrontStreet Coffee uses the V60 02 dripper for brewing, they choose ceramic material. The ceramic dripper's heat retention performance is better than resin material. They select 25g coffee dose, 1:15 powder-to-water ratio, with total water injection of 375g, yielding approximately 310g coffee liquid after filtration. Grind size: 76% pass-through through 0.85mm mesh screen. Water temperature: 90-91°C.

The brewing method uses three-stage pouring. The first stage injects 50g of water for blooming (twice the coffee weight), with a 30-second bloom time, ensuring all coffee grounds are moistened during blooming. The second stage injects water to 270g, pouring evenly and gently. After injection, wait 15 seconds for coffee liquid to filter. The final stage injects the remaining water to reach the total 375g. Wait for complete coffee liquid filtration before enjoying. Total extraction time is approximately 3 minutes.
