How to use AeroPress - How to do it

As the latest trendy extraction tool, the AeroPress has been attracting attention. The reason is "innovation," in any case.

The AeroPress, which is operated by hand and uses a pump to push out, is an unprecedented novelty. I will tell you how to use this device, which is neither a French press nor an espresso machine.

How Many Ways Can You Use an AeroPress?

The AeroPress is a brewing method with many variables. In other words, the process of handling the equipment is a holistic experience. However, in terms of higher requirements for extraction time and speed, everyone has their own approach. New methods continue to emerge, and the perfect extraction method has yet to be discovered.

First, we will introduce the process of handling the equipment, then we will discuss each person's individual techniques and preferences.

How to Handle AeroPress Operations

AeroPress preparation and setup

What You Need to Prepare

  • Complete AeroPress set
  • A sturdy container
  • Hot water: around 80°C
  • Coffee grounds: medium to medium-fine grind

Note: Thin cups and glass containers may crack due to pressure during extraction. Therefore, be sure to use a sturdy container as instructed. When pressing down firmly, a thick cup is safer.

①: Inverted Method

AeroPress inverted method setup

It is recommended to use what is called the inverted method with the AeroPress when you are not yet familiar with it.

Although the upside-down method is not written in the manual, you can see many coffee shops using this inverted technique. In practice, this prevents liquid leakage and makes operation considerably easier, so it is recommended for beginners.

②: Apply Filter to the Cap

This is just an additional illustration. If the filter can be removed from the cap, please wet it with a small amount of water. Then the paper will stick to the cap.

Additionally, since extraction is time-sensitive, preparing these components in advance is the secret to delicious coffee.

③: Pour in Coffee Grounds

From now on, I will pour coffee grounds into the AeroPress. In this case, make it as level as possible to create conditions for more balanced and easier extraction.

④: Add Hot Water, Stir and Wait

After adding the coffee grounds, next add hot water.

Stirring coffee grounds in AeroPress

When you add the hot water, stir gently to let the coffee grounds and hot water become well acquainted. After that, wait in this state for any amount of time.

⑤: Set Up Filter and Container

When it's time, first attach the pre-prepared filter from step ②.

Placing container on AeroPress

Next, place the container on top and invert. The coffee is now ready.

⑥: Flip Over and Press

Flipping AeroPress over to press

After all preparations are complete, please flip it over. Then press down slowly from above. If the pressure is too strong at this time, the container may be damaged, so be sure to press down slowly.

Additionally, the center of force will also shift, so we recommend pressing with both hands from directly above.

When the coffee is extracted, you're finished. Keep the AeroPress inverted to prevent liquid leakage.

How to Make It More Delicious?

Making delicious AeroPress coffee

FrontStreet Coffee's biggest question is: how to make it more delicious?

Since its appearance, the AeroPress has become increasingly popular, and it is still a developing extraction tool. So how to use it varies widely. Even among professionals, there are differences in waiting time and pressing speed.

Even when explaining how to make AeroPress coffee, it might not be about explaining how to make a single cup—I won't tell you exactly how many seconds to wait or how many grams of beans to use. However, the fact that there's no standard method for making AeroPress coffee is also everyone's greatest joy.

Please try various references and experiment to find your own amount of beans and timing.

This might be the most delicious way to make AeroPress coffee.
