Estate Introduction:

Hambela Estate is located in the Guji Zone, which has become one of Ethiopia's most important emerging coffee regions in recent years, with Shakisso being a well-known example. Hambela Estate, situated at 2,150 meters altitude, maintains a natural balance by preserving the original forest environment.

The estate exclusively harvests and selects fully ripe, vibrant red coffee cherries—a remarkable achievement in Ethiopia's predominantly smallholder system, where manual sorting on raised beds is typically the only feasible method. Their natural processing method employs the most rigorous and meticulous techniques, with coffee cherries spread only in single layers on drying beds. The drying schedule is strictly controlled to approximately 18 days.

Single-layer stacking provides the perfect convection and drying environment for coffee cherries—a method that everyone knows produces superior quality but is also the most space-intensive and least production-efficient approach.

Appropriate slow-drying allows coffee cherries to develop optimal water activity during the drying process, resulting in excellent flavor development and enabling green beans to maintain their quality throughout the seasonal storage cycle. However, this method extends the production time required for each batch. Adopting such drying techniques depends not only on favorable weather conditions but also on the producer's willingness to invest.

The estate owner's commitment to coffee quality has impressed not only us but also third-wave coffee professionals from Europe and America. Renowned roasters such as Intelligentsia, Klach, and Barrington consistently select this coffee every year. In March 2016, Barrington achieved an outstanding score of 96 points from Coffee Review using Hambela's washed coffee beans.
