ECX System and Cooperative Background

Since the implementation of the ECX system in 2008, most coffee green beans are auctioned and sold through this system, but cooperatives are not under this jurisdiction. They can directly contact, negotiate with buyers and export.

Konga Coop is one of the 26 unions of The Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperatives Union (YCFCU). YCFCU now represents over 50,000 coffee farmers belonging to over 300,000 family representatives. Established in June 2002, all 26 unions are located in the Gedeo region of southern Ethiopia, which is a very famous important coffee producing area in Ethiopia.

Konga Cooperative Details

Konga Coop is composed of 1,556 small coffee farmer family members, located 5 kilometers south of Yirgacheffe, established in 1994, and joined YCFCU cooperative union in 2002. These small coffee farmers' coffee cultivation areas average less than 1.25 hectares, planted at altitudes of about 1,800 to 2,000 meters. Coffee varieties are mainly Typica and Heirloom mixed.

Every one to two years, cooperative members conduct elections to select an executive committee. The executive committee members can decide on new equipment purchases, exchange business information with members, and determine payment methods for transactions. Additionally, YCFCU assigns professional managers to cooperatives to provide guidance and opinions on harvesting, production, and other procedures, thereby increasing production and improving quality.

The establishment of cooperatives allows farmers under them to avoid low-price exploitation by buyers. When facing economic difficulties, cooperatives can also provide loan assistance. This is quite beneficial for both farmers and coffee production.

This batch of Konga Coop natural Yirgacheffe G1 features: rich floral notes, fresh blueberry fruit, mango and ripe citrus aromas, honey, creamy texture, full-bodied rich tropical fruit flavors.

Ethiopia Coffee Regions

Ethiopia mainly has eight major producing regions: Ekempti, Limu, Illubabor, Djimma, Harrar, Teppi/Bebeka, Sidamo, and Yirgacheffe.

Yirgacheffe Region Information

Yirgacheffe is located in the Gedeo region of southern Ethiopia. This region governs the more famous Yirgacheffe and Kochere areas. Due to the special and unique flavor of coffee produced in Yirgacheffe, which is widely loved, it has its own classification in product categorization and always occupies a place in the global specialty coffee market.

Yirgacheffe, located in Sidama province, is itself a small town with three neighboring small producing areas: Wenago, Kochere, and Gelena Abaya. Because the flavor of coffee produced in these areas is almost the same as Yirgacheffe, Kochere is also classified into this Yirgacheffe regional classification.

Ethiopia implemented a new trading and grading system in November 2009, establishing the Ethiopia Commodity Exchange (ECX), where coffee and other agricultural products are officially traded through this institution. In addition to Yirgacheffe, three sub-regions were added: Wenago, Kochere, and Genlena Abaya, indicating that the flavors of these three regions are extremely delicate and can be further subdivided.
